Virginia Union Defeats Women's Basketball

RICHMOND, Va. Virignia Union scored 15 points from 18 UNC Pembroke women's basketball turnovers and held the lead for 85.3 percent of the contest on the way to a 52-49 victory against the Braves on Saturday afternoon inside Barco-Stevens Hall. 

The Braves (1-6) have now lost their last three contests and fall to 0-3 when playing on the road this season. The Panthers (5-1) have now won their last five games and remain perfect when playing at home.

HOW IT HAPPENED
1ST QUARTER
The first quarter started with Virginia Union taking an early 4-0 lead with buckets from Bruni Martinez and De'Aisjah Somerville at the 7:18 mark. The Braves responded with a layup by Keziyah Sanders, narrowing the gap to 4-2 moments later. Virginia Union maintained its advantage, highlighted by a jumper from De'Aisjah Somerville at 3:16, extending the lead to 10-6. A late three-pointer by Brianna Johnson increased Virginia Union's lead to 15-10 with 32 seconds remaining. Shaymiah Bailey's free throw at the buzzer closed the first quarter, with the Braves trailing 15-11.
2ND QUARTER
Bre'Asia Washington opened the second quarter with a jumper, trimming the UNCP deficit back to 15-13. Virginia Union pushed its lead out to 17-13 with a basket from Somerville, but Bre'Asia Washington responded with and old fashioned three-point play and a layup from Grace Ikenegbu putting UNCP ahead 18-17 with 6:11 on the clock.  However, Virginia Union's Maya Robinson tied the game with a jumper at 3:20, and then hit another at 1:14 to extend their lead out to 26-22. Anastasia Sinclair's free throws with 10 seconds left cut the UNCP deficit to two points, concluding the quarter with the Braves trailing 26-24.
3RD QUARTER
Shaymiah Bailey tied the score at 26 with a layup just a minute into the half, but Virginia Union went on a 13-0 run to push its lead out to 39-26 at the 5:29 mark. Shaymiah Bailey scored six-straight points and a free throw from Anastasia Sinclair cut the UNCP deficit back to 39-33, but the Panthers held a 43-34 heading into the final period. 
4TH QUARTER
Bre'Asia Washington and Tiana Spann combined to go on a 10-0 run to give UNCP a 44-43 advantage with 5:47 remaining in regulation. The Braves would take a 48-45 lead following a layup from Tiana Spann with 3:50 on the clock, but Virginia Union outscored UNC Pembroke 7-1 in the final minutes to secure the outcome. 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
+ Bre'Asia Washington finished with a game-high 17 points on a 6-for-11 shooting performance. The newcomer posted her first double-double with 10 rebounds as well. 
+ Shaymiah Bailey registered a career-high 15 points highlighted by a 9-for-13 showing from the free throw line. Bailey grabbed five rebounds, had one assist and one steal in 27 minutes.
+ Anastasia Sinclair added seven points, two rebounds one assist and one steal in 36 minutes of play. 
NOTABLES
+ UNC Pembroke shot 34.8 percent from the floor while Virginia Union finished the game shooting 39.6 percent from the field.
+ The Black & Gold went 17-of-22 from the free throw line. Viriginia Union was just 6-for-14 from the charity stripe.
+ UNCP was 0-for-15 from the 3-point line. 
+ VUU scored 15 points from 18 UNC Pembroke turnovers. 
UP NEXT
The Braves will be back in action on Sunday in an exhibition against Division I Longwood. Tipoff is set for 1 p.m. inside the Joan Perry Brock Center.
