Women's Basketball Battles Longwood In Exhibition

FARMVILLE, Va. The UNC Pembroke women's basketball team shot 43.6 percent from the field, but Longwood scored 32 points from turnovers to highlight a 90-62 victory over the Braves in an exhibition contest on Sunday afternoon inside the Joan Perry Brock Center. 

The Braves (1-6) scored 30 points in the paint and had 10 different players score during Sunday's game. The Lancers (7-4)  have won three out of their last four games and improve to 5-1 when playing at home.

HOW IT HAPPENED
1ST QUARTER
The game started with Longwood establishing early control as Amor Harris scored a jumper at 8:50, setting the tone for the quarter. The Lancers capitalized on UNC Pembroke's turnovers throughout the quarter, scoring 22 points, with Malea Brown contributing a three-pointer at 2:22. Frances Ulysse and Jesstynie Scott each added layups to extend the home team's lead. Bre'Asia Washington managed to score twice for the Braves, but Longwood concluded the quarter ahead, 22-6, aided by their strong defensive efforts and fast-paced play.
2ND QUARTER
Longwood maintained control in the second quarter, extending their lead with a series of successful plays. Scott contributed a three-point play early on, converting a layup and a free throw at 9:30, pushing Longwood ahead. Brown's three-pointer at 6:34 and her late quarter scoring provided a crucial boost for the hosts. Despite the UNCP efforts, including Shaymiah Bailey's steady mid-range shooting, Longwood finished the period with a 48-28 advantage, aided by Ulysse's pair of free throws with just one second remaining.
3RD QUARTER
Longwood expanded their lead in the third quarter, leveraging a robust offensive performance to outscore UNC Pembroke 27-23. Brown's layup at 7:51, followed by a free throw, contributed to Longwood's momentum, pushing their score to 55. UNC Pembroke responded with key three-pointers from Natalie Evington, narrowing the gap. However, Longwood's Scott scored consistently, including a layup and a jumper, maintaining their advantage. Anastasia Sinclair's layup and subsequent free throw in the closing seconds trimmed the deficit, but Longwood finished the quarter ahead, 75-51.
4TH QUARTER
In the fourth quarter, Longwood extended their lead over the Braves, finishing with a 90-62 victory. Harris opened the quarter with a fast-break layup after a steal by Scott at 9:34, increasing Longwood's momentum. Camille Kerridge responded for UNC Pembroke with a three-pointer at 8:09, bringing the score to 77-54. Despite efforts from the Braves, including a layup by Grace Ikenegbu at 5:48, Longwood maintained control, with Jaci Bolden adding a three-pointer at 3:47 to solidify their advantage. Longwood's defense was effective, forcing several turnovers and securing the win.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
+ Shaymiah Bailey scored a team-best 10 points on a 4-for-6 shooting performance. The freshman grabbed six rebounds and had one assist in 24 minutes of work.
+ Newcomer Breanna Perry finished with nine points and went 3-for-4 from the perimeter. Perry pulled down three rebounds and had a pair of assists.
+ Grace Ikenegbu flirted with a double-double with six points and a team-best nine rebounds in 27 minutes of action. 
NOTABLES
+ UNC Pembroke shot 43.6 percent from the floor while Longwood shot 43.0 percent from the field. 
+ The Braves finished the contest shooting 40 percent (6-for-15) from the 3-point line, while Longwood was 7-for-20 (35%) from deep.
+ The Lancers scored 32 points from 27 UNCP turnovers.
The Braves posted a 41-38 advantage on the boards. 
UP NEXT
The Braves will take a week off before getting back into Conference play when they host Ferrum on Dec. 16. Tipoff is set for 5 p.m. at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court.
