Second Half Surge Helps Women's Basketball By Ferrum

PEMBROKE The UNC Pembroke women's basketball team shot 43.3 percent from the field in the second half and scored 32 points in the paint on the way to a 63-58 victory over Ferrum on Tuesday evening at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court. 

The victory for the Braves (2-6, 2-1 CC) snapped a three-game skid and marked their second win at home this season. The Panthers (4-6, 2-2 CC) have now lost three out of their last five games and fall to 1-5 when playing on the road.

HOW IT HAPPENED
1ST QUARTER
Anastasia Sinclair put UNC Pembroke on the board with two early free throws, but Ferrum quickly responded with five-straight points. Tiana Spann and Grace Ikenegbu contributed with key baskets, giving the Braves 10-5 lead. However, Ferrum's Zy'Breayziah Alexander and Breyana Kimmons combined for a late scoring surge, including a pair of 3-pointers and fast break layups, allowing Ferrum to finish the first quarter ahead, 17-10.
2ND QUARTER
Ferrum took an early lead in the second quarter with a layup from Taryn Blankenship at 9:35, followed by a 3-pointer from Kleiauna Riddick at 8:47 to extend their advantage out to 22-10. Bre'Asia Washington responded for UNCP with two free throws at 7:19 and a layup at 6:10, helping to cut the deficit back to 27-18. Despite a late layup by Riddick with 54 seconds remaining, Grace Ikenegbu closed the quarter by converting two free throws with 5 seconds left, as the teams headed to the locker rooms with Ferrum leading 33-28.
3RD QUARTER
In a tightly contested third quarter, the teams exchanged the lead multiple times. Blankenship scored two early free throws for Ferrum, extending their lead out to 35-28, while Bre'Asia Washington's free throws later narrowed the gap to 37-34. Riddick hit a crucial 3-pointer for Ferrum at 6:05 pushing its lead to 42-36. Natalie Evington sparked the UNCP offense with a three to cut the UNCP deficit back to 42-41, followed by a layup from Grace Ikenegbu at 1:34, giving Braves a 43-42 lead. In the final seconds, Anastasia Sinclair's free throw tied the game at 46-46 heading into the final period. 
4TH QUARTER
Tiana Spann initiated the fourth quarter for the Braves with a layup to put the hosts ahead 48-46. Natalie Evington continued to be instrumental, hitting multiple 3-pointers, including one at the 2:33 mark that pushed the UNC Pembroke lead out to 62-58. Despite Ferrum's Blankenship and Kimmons scoring crucial baskets, the Braves maintained their advantage. Bre'Asia Washington secured the victory with a free throw in the final seconds, leading to a 63-58 win over Ferrum.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
+ Junior Natalie Evington finished with a game-high 15 points highlighted by a 5-for-10 clip from the perimeter. Evington grabbed four rebounds, had one assist and one steal in 24 minutes of work.
+ Tiana Spann chipped in 14 points on a 6-for-8 shooting performance. Spann flirted with a double-double with eight rebounds, with also adding three steals and one block. 
+ Bre'Asia Washington came off the bench to add 11 points and was 5-for-7 from the free throw line. The junior grabbed five rebounds in 30 minutes of action. 
NOTABLES
+ UNC Pembroke shot 37.7 percent from the field, while Ferrum shot 37.5 percent from the floor. 
+ UNCP had four different players score in double-figures.
+ The Black & Gold posted a 41-35 advantage in the rebound column.
+ Ferrum held the lead for 56.6 percent of the game. However, the Panthers did not lead after 14 seconds remaining in the third quarter. 
UP NEXT
The Braves will step out of Conference Carolinas play on Saturday when they travel to St. Augustine, Fla., to take on Flagler. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. inside Flagler Gymnsasium.
