Second Half Helps Lenoir-Rhyne By Men's Basketball

PEMBROKE – The UNC Pembroke men's basketball trailed by three points with seven minutes remaining in the contest, but Lenoir-Rhyne shot 56 percent from the field in the second half and closed out the game on a 15-2 run to secure an 83-67 victory over the Braves on Saturday afternoon at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court. 

The setback for the Braves (6-5) snapped a three game win streak and have now lost the last two meetings with Lenoir-Rhyne. The Bears (11-3) push their win streak out to three games and improve to 4-1 when playing on the road this season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
1ST HALF
The game began with Lenoir-Rhyne's Junior Hodnett hitting a fast-break 3-pointer, quickly answered by a layup from UNC Pembroke's Nygell Verdier. The Braves took an early 13-5 lead following a triple from Quay Watson. Lenoir-Rhyne put together a 14-8 surge to cut the LR deficit back to 20-19 with 9:57 left to play in the first half. Javonte Waverly sparked the UNCP offense with a pair of back-to-back steals and a pair of dunks for give the hosts a 35-33 lead with 2:46 on the clock, but the Bears scored the final five points of the half to hold a 38-35 lead as the teams headed into the locker rooms. 
2ND HALF
Lenoir-Rhyne maintained a strong lead throughout the second half as Conrad Luczynski added to the advantage with a layup at 19:43, increasing the lead to 42-35. Despite Quay Watson's efforts, Lenoir-Rhyne pushed its lead out to 52-41 with a layup from Blessin Kimble with 17:19 on the clock. Javonte Waverly started the Braves on a run and cut their deficit back to 62-57 with a layup from Waverly with 10:20 left to play in the contest, but a jumper from Akili Evans cushioned the LR lead, 68-61. Javonte Waverly's layup in transition made it a one possession game, 68-65, but Lenoir-Rhyne went on a 15-2 run to close out the game to secure the outcome. 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
+ Senior Javonte Waverly scored a team-high 19 points on a 7-for-13 shooting performance. Waverly flirted with a double-double with eight rebounds, while also dishing out four assists, logging two steals and one block in 30 minutes. 
+ Quay Watson added 17 points going 7-for-16 from the floor. Watson tallied four assists, had a pair of steals and two rebounds. 
+ Demar Anderson chipped in eight points highlighted by a 2-for-2 clip from the perimeter. 
NOTABLES
+ UNC Pembroke shot 48.1 percent from the field, while Lenoir-Rhyne shot 50 percent from the floor. The Bears were also shooting 56 percent from the field in the second half. 
+ The Black & Gold outscored LR 40-28 with points in the paint and posted a 34-30 advantage in rebounds.
+ Lenoir-Rhyne scored 27 points from 18 UNC Pembroke turnovers. 
UP NEXT
The Braves will step back into conference play on Saturday when they travel to Bristol, Tenn., to battle King. Tipoff is set for 4 p.m. inside the Student Center Complex.
