Men's Basketball Holds Off Virginia State

PETERSBURG, Va. – The UNC Pembroke men's basketball knocked down 10 3-pointers and made 33 free throws to highlight a 75-68 non-conference victory over Virginia State on Saturday afternoon inside the VSU Multipurpose Center.

The victory for the Braves (5-4) have now won the last four meetings with Virginia State and are 2-0 when playing in Petersburg, Va. The Trojans (4-5) have now lost three out of their last four games and are 0-3 when playing on their home court this season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
1ST HALF
The game started with Javonte Waverly hitting a 3-pointer to give the Braves an early 3-0 lead. Waverly continued his strong performance by scoring another 3-pointer at the 17:06 mark. Virginia State closed the gap with a layup from Tim Uzochuwku, bringing the score to 6-2. Both teams exchanged leads and ties throughout the opening half. As the half drew to a close, Waverly extended UNC Pembroke's lead with consecutive 3-pointers, including one at the buzzer, allowing the visitors to end the first half ahead 35-29.
2ND HALF
Joe'l Pettiford contributed early with a layup at 19:39, while Quay Watson added a fast-break layup shortly after, pushing the lead to 41-29 for UNCP. Virginia State's efforts to close the gap included a jumper from Will Hopkins at 15:52 to cut the Trojan deficit back to 41-34. However, UNC Pembroke kept a double-digit lead including a triple from Dallas Whitney to give the Braves a 60-47 lead with 6:55 on the clock. Despite a late surge from Virginia State, including a jumper by Jared White with 35 seconds left in regulation, the Braves sealed the victory with free throws from Quay Watson and Javonte Waverly in the final seconds.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
+ Senior Javonte Waverly scored a career and game-high 34 points on a 9-for-14 shooting performance. Waverly was a perfect 10-for-10 from the free throw line and grabbed four rebounds.
+ Quay Watson turned in a 16 point showing going 4-for-9 from the floor. Watson grabbed five rebounds, dished out three assists and logged a pair of blocks. 
+ Dallas Whitney came off of the bench to add eight points in 18 minutes of work. Whitney was 2-for-4 from the perimeter and tallied a rebound and an assist.
NOTABLES
+ UNC Pembroke shot 36.4 percent from the floor while Virginia State shot 37.0 percent from the field.
+ There were 80 combined free throws shot during Saturday's contest. UNCP finished the game going 33-for-41 from the charity stripe, while VSU was 25-for-39.
+ The Braves shot 41.7 percent (10-for-24) from the 3-point line. 
+ The Trojans outscored the Braves 24-8 with points in the paint and picked up 20 points for 19 UNCP turnovers. 
UP NEXT
The Braves will take over a week off before returning to Conference Carolinas play on Dec. 16 when they host Ferrum. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court.
