Women’s Basketball Cools Off Emmanuel

PEMBROKE – The UNC Pembroke women's basketball team shot a season-high 51.8 percent from the field and held the lead for nearly 30 minutes on the way to a 73-52 victory over Emmanuel on Saturday afternoon at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court. 
 
The Braves (17-4, 11-2 CC) have now won their last three games and improve to 8-1 at home this season. The setback for the Lions (7-13, 6-7 CC) snapped a three-game win streak and fall to 3-6 when playing on the road this season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
1ST QUARTER
Emmanuel took what would be its largest lead of the afternoon, 8-4, with a jumper from Ade'Jah James at the four-minute mark in the first quarter. UNC Pembroke knotted the score at 8 with back-to-back layups from Tiana Spann, but Abby Crawford answered with a triple to give the Lions an 11-8 lead. Stella Mollica sparked the Braves on a 6-4 surge to end the first period trailing 15-14. 
2ND QUARTER
UNC Pembroke started the period on an 8-0 run that stretched to the seven-minute mark to take a 22-15 lead following a layup from Hannah Russell. Natalee Goff stopped the run with a jumper to cut the Lions deficit back to 22-17, but UNC Pembroke hit three 3-pointers in a row to close out the half on a 16-5 run and hold a 38-22 lead as the teams headed into the locker rooms. 
3RD QUARTER
The Braves started the period on a 9-0 run and took their largest lead of the contest, 47-22, with a three from Natalie Evington at the 6:31 mark. Emmanuel scored the next four points to work their deficit back to 47-26, but layups from Anastasia Sinclair and Maya Hood put the host out in front 51-28 with three minutes remaining in the quarter. The Lions finished the period on a 10-0 run to trail 51-38 heading into the final stanza. 
4TH QUARTER
Emmanuel continued to chip away at its deficit and trailed 56-44 after a layup from Maddie Futch with just under five minutes remaining in regulation. UNCP put together an 11-2 run capped off with a pair of Stella Mollica free throws to push the lead out to 67-46 with 2:45 on the clock. Ade'Jah James made good on a layup, but Natalie Evington canned a three to give the Braves a 70-48 advantage with two minutes remaining in the contest. 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
+ Natalie Evington finished with a career and game-high 19 points on a perfect 7-for-7 shooting performance from the field. The sophomore had one rebound and one block in 20 minutes of action.
+ Zaria Clark turned in a 15-point game and was 5-for-14 from the field. The senior pulled down seven rebounds, had a pair of steals and one block in 34 minutes on work. 
+ Kelci Adams registered a double-double with 10 points and a career and game-high 15 rebounds. The graduate student finished with four assists and one steal. 
NOTABLES
+ UNC Pembroke shot a season-best 51.8 percent from the field. The Braves shot 71.4 percent from the floor during the second quarter, and closed out the game shooting 70 percent from the field. 
+ The Black & Gold scored 12 points in transition. 
+ The Braves held the lead for 73.6 percent of Saturday's victory. 

UP NEXT
The Braves will be back in action on Monday when they host Francis Marion for the Battle of I-95. Tipoff is set for 5 p.m. at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court.
