Late Run Helps Francis Marion By Women’s Basketball

PEMBROKE – The UNC Pembroke women's basketball team shot 51.8 percent from the field and scored 21 second chance points, but a late run in the fourth quarter helped Francis Marion to a 78-77 victory over the Braves on Monday evening at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court.
 
The setback for the Braves (17-5, 11-3 CC) snapped a three-game winning streak and marked just the second loss at home this season. The Patriots (15-5, 10-3 CC) have now won their last two games and improve to 6-3 when playing on the road.

HOW IT HAPPENED
1ST QUARTER
Francis Marion took an early 8-5 lead with a three from Jada Richards, but a layup from Tiana Spann worked the score back to 8-7 at the 6:36 mark. The Patriots scored the next six points to push their lead out to 14-7, but Tiana Spann's layup stopped the run as the Braves trailed 14-9 with 4-1/2 minutes remaining in the period. FMU closed out the half on a 10-6 run to take its largest lead of the night, 24-15, heading into the second quarter. 
2ND QUARTER
UNC Pembroke went on a 10-0 run to start the period and took a 25-24 lead following a layup from Anastasia Sinclair with 7:50 remaining in the half. A 12-3 UNCP run push the hosts lead out to 37-27 with a layup from Tiana Spann at the 3:25 mark, but Trinity Delaney's layup stopped the run moments later. A triple from Stella Mollica gave the Braves their largest lead of the contest, 40-29 with 1:54 on the clock, but Francis Marion went on a 9-2 surge to cut its deficit back to 42-38 with 12 seconds on the clock. Zaria Clark knocked down a jumper as time expired to end the half and send the teams to the locker rooms with UNCP leading 44-38. 
3RD QUARTER
A quick layup from Kelci Adams to start the half cushioned the UNC Pembroke lead, 46-38, but Francis Marion went on a 10-2 run to tie the score at 48 on a three from Trinity Adams at the 6:23 mark. A layup from Maya Hood and a jumper from Stella Mollica put UNCP out in front 52-48, but five straight points for the Patriots gave FMU a 53-52 lead with 3:37 left in the quarter. The hosts closed out the period on an 8-3 surge to hold a 60-55 lead heading into the final stanza.
4TH QUARTER
Layups from Anastasia Sinclair and Zaria Clark pushed the UNCP lead out to 64-55, but a 10-0 Francis Marion run gave the Patriots a 65-64 lead with 5:13 left to play in regulation. Kennedi Simmons knocked down a triple to give FMU a 76-72 lead with 1:16 on the clock, but Kelci Adams made it a one possession contest making two of her three free throw attempts. The Braves forced a Patriots turnover with 22 seconds remaining, but missed three shot attempts. Zaria Clark got fouled on a shot with one second remaining and made one of two free throw attempts as FMU held onto the victory. 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
+ Zaria Clark finished with a game-high 18 points on an 8-for-16 shooting performance. The senior pulled down seven rebounds, five steals, and two assists in 40 minutes of action.
+ Anastasia Sinclair finished with 14 points on a 6-for-11 showing from the field. The sophomore grabbed six rebounds and had two assists in 37 minutes of work.
+ Tiana Spann came off of the bench to turn in a career-high 13 points on a 5-for-7 shooting clip, while also grabbing six rebounds. 
NOTABLES
+ UNC Pembroke matched its season-high shooting 51.8 percent from the field. 
+ The Braves finished 14-for-22 from the free throw line. 
+ Francis Marion scored 27 points from 18 UNC Pembroke turnovers.
+ The Black & Gold outscored FMU 21-13 on second chance points

The Braves will trek to to the mountains of Georgia on Saturday when they battle Young Harris. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. inside the Harp Recreation & Commencement Center.
