Women’s Basketball Routs Southern Wesleyan

CENTRAL, S.C. – The UNC Pembroke women's basketball team shot 47.5 percent from the floor and scored 28 second chance points to fuel a 75-62 victory over Southern Wesleyan on Saturday afternoon inside Tysinger Gymnasium. 
 
The Braves (19-6, 13-4 CC) have now won their last two games and improve to 8-0 all-time against Southern Wesleyan. The Warriors (7-18, 3-14 CC) have now lost their last three outings and fall to 5-7 when playing at home.

HOW IT HAPPENED
1ST QUARTER
Southern Wesleyan took what would be its largest lead of the contest, 12-4, halfway through the opening period with a three from Asia Pearley. Six-straight points from Zaria Clark worked the UNC Pembroke deficit back to 12-10 at the 2:53 mark, but SWU answered with a layup to take a 14-10 advantage. A triple from Natalie Evington ended the quarter with UNCP trailing 14-13. 
2ND QUARTER
Natalie Evington canned a three from the top of the key to give UNC Pembroke its first lead of the contest, 16-14 just 10 seconds into the quarter. The Warriors tied the score at 16 with a layup from Dynasty Shegog, but UNCP put together a 6-0 run capped off with an old-fashioned three-point play from Anastasia Sinclair to lead 22-16 with 7:36 remaining in the half. The hosts cut their deficit back to 24-21 with a three from Asia Pearley, but Stella Mollica's layup sparked the Braves on a 9-0 run to push their lead out to 33-23 capped off with a layup from Anastasia Sinclair with 2:14 on the clock. UNCP shot 46.7 percent from the field during the frame and held a 33-28 lead as the teams headed into the locker rooms. 
3RD QUARTER
Southern Wesleyan started the half on an 8-2 run to take a slight 36-35 advantage with a layup from Petyon Looky just three minutes into the period, but a pair of layups from Tiana Spann put UNC Pembroke out in front 39-36 moments later. The Warriors scored the next five points to lead 41-39, but Anastasia Sinclair sent the Braves on an 8-0 surge to lead 47-41 with 3:37 left in the quarter. Both teams shot better than 58 percent from the floor, but UNCP outscored SWU 11-6 in the final minutes to hold a 58-47 advantage heading into the final stanza. 
4TH QUARTER
A three from Natalie Evington following by a jumper from Hannah Russell gave UNC Pembroke its largest lead of the afternoon, 63-49, with 8:15 remaining in regulation. Southern Wesleyan put together a 7-0 run to chip away at their deficit, 63-56, but Natalie Evington stopped the run with a triple to push the UNCP lead out to 66-56 with 3:52 on the clock. The Warriors tried to make a comeback, 66-59, with a three from Peyton Looky, but the Braves outscored the hosts 9-3 in the final minutes to fuel the outcome. 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
+ Natalie Evington finished with a game-high 18 points on a 6-for8 shooting performance from the perimeter. The sophomore grabbed four rebounds and had one steal in 21 minutes of work. 
+ Zaria Clark posted her 22nd career double-double with 15 points and a game-best 13 rebounds. The senior added five assists, two steals and one block. 
+ Anastasia Sinclair finished with 15 points on a 6-for-10 shooting performance. The sophomore flirted with a double-double with nine assists, while also adding five rebounds, three steals, and two blocks. 
NOTABLES
+ UNC Pembroke shot 47.5 percent from the field, while Southern Wesleyan shot 45.5 percent from the floor. 
+ The Braves posted a 28-8 advantage on second chance points. 
+ The Black & Gold scored 22 points from 15 Southern Wesleyan turnovers. 
+ UNCP held the lead for 68.8 percent of Saturday's victory.

UP NEXT
The Braves will play their final road contest of the season on Wednesday when they make the short trip down I-95 to battle with Francis Marion. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m. inside the Smith University Center.
