Women’s Basketball Falls To Francis Marion

FLORENCE, S.C. – Francis Marion never trailed and scored 15 points off of turnovers to defeat the UNC Pembroke women's basketball team 56-48 on Wednesday evening inside the Smith University Center.  
 
The Braves (19-7, 13-5 CC) have now lost the 10 contests when playing Francis Marion in Florence. The Patriots (19-5, 14-3 CC) have now won six-straight games and improve to 12-2 when playing at home.

HOW IT HAPPENED
1ST QUARTER
Francis Marion scored the first two buckets of the contest to take an early lead, but layups from Zaria Clark and Kelci Adams tied the score at 4-4 with four minutes remaining in the opening period. The Patriots went on a 6-0 surge to push their lead out to 10-6, but Tiana Spann's layup closed out the period with the Braves trailing 10-6.
2ND QUARTER
Trinity Adams cushioned Francis Marion's lead, 13-7, with an old-fashioned three-point play to start the quarter, but Kelci Adams answered with a three-point play to cut the UNC Pembroke deficit back to 13-9 with 7:55 remaining in the half. The hosts pushed their lead out to 20-9 following a triple from Kiara Croskey, but a layup from Anastasia Sinclair stopped the run as UNCP trailed 20-11 with 3:54 on the clock. FMU outscored UNCP 7-4 to end the period and send the teams to the locker rooms with the Patriots leading 27-15. 
3RD QUARTER
Anastasia Sinclair and Hannah Russell each made a basket to chip away at the UNC Pembroke deficit, 27-19, but five-straight points for Francis Marion put the hosts ahead 31-19 with a three from Kiana Lee in transition. Anastasia Sinclair started UNCP on an 8-6 surge capped off with a jumper from Stella Mollica to whittle the Braves deficit back to 38-27 at just under the four-minute mark. Francis Marion took its largest lead of the night, 42-27 with a layup from Trinity Adams, as UNC Pembroke trailed 42-29 heading into the final period. 
4TH QUARTER
Hannah Russell knocked down a jumper followed by a three from Kelci Adams to file the UNC Pembroke deficit back to single-digits, 47-38, but Francis Marion answered with a jumper in the paint from Kennedi Simmons to give the hosts a 49-38 lead with 3:39 remaining in regulation. The Braves were able to cut their lead down to 49-42 following a pair of fastbreak baskets from Anastasia Sinclair and Hannah Russell, but the hosts went on a 5-0 run to take a 54-42 advantage with 53 seconds remaining in the contest. 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
+ Anastasia Sinclair finished with a team-high 12 points. The sophomore pulled down six rebounds and dished out three assists. 
+ Kelci Adams posted a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds. The Fort Mill, S.C., native added a pair of assists and one steal.
+ Hannah Russell also posted a double-double with 10 points and a career-high 14 rebounds in 32 minutes of work.
 
NOTABLES
+ UNC Pembroke shot 31.8 percent from the floor while Francis Marion finished the contest shooting 35.9 percent from the floor. 
+ The Braves outscored the Patriots 32-28 with points in the paint.
+ FMU scored 15 points from 11 UNCP turnovers.

The Braves will be back in action on Saturday when they welcome North Greenville to town for Senior Day. Senior day festivities will take place prior to the 2 p.m. tipoff at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court.
