Mars Hill Takes Doubleheader Over Softball

MARS HILL – The UNC Pembroke softball team held a lead in both contests, but timely hitting helped Mars Hill to a non-conference sweep over the Braves on Friday afternoon at Ponder Field. MHU defeated UNCP 7-4 in the opening game, and needed nine innings to take game two, 9-8, in the back half of the doubleheader. 
 
UNCP tallied nine hits and scored a pair of runs in the top of the sixth inning to take a 3-2 lead, but MHU put up five runs in the bottom half of the sixth inning to steal the opening game. 
 
The Braves got a quick start recording four hits in the first inning and scoring five runs in the inning, but the Lions would go on to score two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to send the game into extra innings. UNCP stranded 14 runners during the contest.

KEY INNINGS (GAME 1)
BOT 3 Mars Hill loaded the bases after a walk from C Sterling, an infield single from Bri Weimer and a walk from Leah Grimes. Farley Park smacked a double to the left center field gap to score a pair of runs. 
TOP 6 The Braves loaded the bases with singles from Kaitlynn Hunt and Alona Hanna, and a fielder's choice from Kynley Brewer. Chloe Locklear found the outfield grass to score Hunt and Hanna to give UNCP a 3-2 lead. 
BOT 6 The Lions loaded the bases as Jessica Senn drew a leadoff walk, Maia Sholter was hit by a pitch, and Brooke Hanson reached on a fielder's choice. Daci Sarver knocked a singled up the middle to drive in a pair of runs, followed by an RBI single from Bri Weimer. MHU loaded the bases again with a walk, but wild pitch plated another Mars Hill runner. Farley Park singled to center field to drive in a run and put the hosts ahead 7-3. 
KEY INNINGS (GAME 2)
TOP 1 UNC Pembroke loaded the bases as Alex Serbio reached on a fielding error and Kaitlynn Hunt and Alona Hanna both singled. Katie Hogue drove in a pair of runs with a double to left field followed by a two-run single from Marijo Wilkes. Zoe Godard hit a deep sacrifice fly to center field to bring home a runner and put the Braves ahead 5-0. 
BOT 1 Bri Weimer drew a walk, advanced to second on a wild pitch and would score on a double from Maia Shorter. Leah Grimes drew a walk, but a two-run double to the outfield gap from Farley Park cut Mars Hill's deficit back to 5-3. 
TOP 4 Alex Serbio and Alona Hanna both singled, as Katie Hogue scored Serbio with an RBI single to right field to give UNCP a 7-3 lead. 
BOT 7 MHU put runners on the corners after singles from Farley Park and Brooke Hanson, but Daci Sarver singled up the middle to score both runners and send the game into extra innings. 
BOT 10 Riley Walters started the inning on second with the International tiebreaker rule in play and would move to third on a wild pitch. Sydney Hodges grounded out but scored Waters for the win.
