Baseball Sweeps Doubleheader And Series Over Tornado

FLORENCE, S.C. – UNC Pembroke rode a quality start from Jonathon Jacobs to a 7-2 win in Game 2 of the series, and weathered eight errors by using 17 hits and 11 walks from King pitchers to take an 18-14 win in the nightcap to take the series sweep Saturday at CarolinaBank Field.

Jacobs punched out ten over six innings in Game 2, allowing just two earned runs on the way to his second win of the season. Blake Hinson led the way offensively with a 3-4 showing, including two doubles.

In Game 3, the Braves twice faced a six-run deficit, before tying the game at 14-14 in the seventh and going ahead for good with a four-run eighth to take the win. Hayden Davis turned in a 5-6, four-RBI game, while Landon Lucas chipped in with a homer and four RBI and also earned the win with two scoreless innings.

The Braves (13-5, 3-3 CC) improved to 13-1 in the all-time series with the Tornado (4-14, 2-7 CC), while also scoring 18 or more runs for the third time in the series.

UNCP will be back in action Tuesday, March 4 as they travel to Hartsville, S.C. to take on Coker for a non-conference matchup. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. at Tom J. New Field.

KEY INNINGS (GAME 1)
BOT 3 Blake Hinson lifted a two-out double to left center to get things going and came around to score on Isaias Villarreal's RBI single to give the Braves a 1-0 lead. A dropped fly ball by King allowed Villarreal to score, while Will Hood tacked on another run with an RBI single. Landon Lucas capped off the inning with a two-run triple to make it 5-0.
BOT 4 Jacob Smith led off the frame with a double and moved to third when Ramses Cordova reached on a bunt. Luis Ramirez would score Smith with an RBI single while Hinson reached on a bunt single to load the bases, before Villarreal made it 7-2 with a sac fly.
KEY INNINGS (GAME 2)
TOP 2 King's Ethan Pribramsky started the scoring with an RBI walk before Truman Roper blasted a grand slam and Nathan Borchardt added a three-run homer to cap off an eight-run inning.
BOT 3 Isaias Villarreal and Hayden Davis each reached on singles and would jog home on a Landon Lucas three-run blast to cut the lead to 9-6. 
TOP 4 The Tornado scored three runs on one hit and two UNCP errors to take their second six-run lead of the game at 12-6.
BOT 4 Luis Ramirez worked a leadoff walk and moved to second on a Blake Hinson single. Villarreal advanced them both 90 feet with a sac bunt before Will Hood scored Ramirez with an infield single. Davis followed with an RBI single to score Hinson before Zane Brockman walked to load the bases. Hood scored on a wild pitch to make it 12-9, while Ashton Donathan delivered a two-run double to cut it to 12-11.
BOT 7 Trailing 14-12 entering the frame, Ramirez led off with a double and came home to score on Hinson's RBI single, while Zane Brockman would score Hinson with an RBI walk to tie the game at 14-14.
BOT 8 Ramses Cordova got aboard on a leadoff walk, moved to second on Ramirez's sac bunt, and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Hinson followed with a walk and a stolen base, before Villarreal gave the Braves its first lead since the first inning with a two-run single. Hood followed with an RBI triple, before Davis collected his fifth hit of the game with an RBI single to make it 18-14.
