Softball Sweeps Mount Olive In Conference Opener

MOUNT OLIVE – The UNC Pembroke softball team registered 19 hits and had timely hitting in extra innings to secure a conference opener sweep over Mount Olive on Wednesday afternoon at Cassell Field. 
 
Mount Olive scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth inning of game one, but a late rally and the winning run scored in the sixth inning helped UNC Pembroke to a 3-2 victory in eight innings of the opening contest following six hits. 
 
The Braves tallied 13 hits and tacked up four runs in the second inning along with three runs in the top of the ninth to complete the sweep with a 9-7 victory in game two.

KEY INNINGS (GAME 1)
TOP 1 Alex Serbio singled to left field, stole second and advanced to third on a single from Kaitlynn Hunt. Alona Hanna scored Serbio with a sacrifice fly to center field. 
TOP 5 Kaitlynn Hunt singled up the middle and scored on a double from Marijo Wilkes. 
BOT 5 Alyssa Smothers doubled to right field and advanced to third on a bunt single from Leah Russell, who stole second on the next pitch. Both runners advanced on a passed ball and Russell would score on a ground out to tie the score at 2-2.
TOP 8 With the International tiebreaker rule in play, Marijo Wilkes started the inning on second base. The Braves loaded the bases when Katie Hogue was hit by a pitch and Tiara Stueck reaching on a fielding error. A Kylie Johnson single up the middle scored Wilkes for the winning run. 
KEY INNINGS (GAME 2)
TOP 2 The Braves put runners on first and second after an Alex Serbio single and Kaitlynn Hunt reached on a fielding error. Alona Hanna scored Serbio with a single to left field, followed by an RBI single from Samantha Allred. Katie Hogue smacked a single to the outfield gap to bring home a pair of runs and give UNCP a 6-1 lead.
BOT 2 Mount Olive loaded the bases via Olivia Castillo being hit by a pitch, McKenzie Millard's single down the left field line and Alyssa Smothers drawing a walk. Samantha Taylor singled up the middle to drive in a pair of runs, followed by an RBI single from Liz Thome down the right field line as UMO trailed 6-4. 
TOP 9 Alex Serbio started the inning on second base with the International tiebreaker rule, but a double down the left field line from Kaitlynn Hunt scored Serbio. The Braves would load the bases with a single through the right side from Alona Hanna and Samantha Allred was hit by a pitch. Marijo Wilkes hit a sacrifice fly to center field to score Hunt, and Hanna would score on the same play after an ill-timed Mount Olive error to put the Braves ahead 9-6.

The Braves will be back in action on Saturday when they travel to Wilson to take on Barton. First pitch of the twinbill is slated for noon at Jeffries Field.
