No. 25 Men’s Basketball Rallies, Falls To No. 10 Lenoir-Rhyne In Regional Final

COLUMBUS, Ga. – The 25th-ranked UNC Pembroke men's basketball team rallied from a 19-point deficit but fell 76-74 to Lenoir-Rhyne in overtime of the NCAA Southeast Regional final on Tuesday inside the Frank G. Lumpkin Center.
 
The setback for the Braves (25-7) snapped a 14-game win streak in the program's first regional final appearance. The Bears (29-5) will ride a nine-game win streak into the NCAA Elite 8 in Evansville, Ind. 

 
THE BASICS

HOW IT HAPPENED
1ST HALF
Lenior-Rhyne shot 41.4 percent from the field and took a 14-11 lead after an old-fashioned three-point play from Junior Hodnett with 13:33 remaining in the opening period. Dallas Gardner cut the UNC Pembroke deficit back to 14-11 moments later with a layup, but the Bears went on a 9-0 surge to push their lead out to 23-11 with 9:49 remaining in the half. The Braves put together an 11-2 run to cut away at their deficit, 25-22, with a pair of free throws from Bradlee Haskell with six minutes remaining in the half. Lenior-Rhyne closed out the half on a 12-2 run and held a 37-24 lead as the teams headed to the locker rooms. 
2ND HALF
Lenoir-Rhyne started the half on a 15-9 run to take its largest lead of the contest, 52-33 after a pair of free throws from Junior Hodnett at the 14:49 mark. UNC Pembroke answered with a 14-4 surge to continue to chip away at its deficit, 56-47, following a layup from JaJuan Carr with 8:44 left to play in regulation. The Bears pushed their lead out to 60-50 with a triple from Julian Dozier, but a layup from Dallas Gardner and a three from Bradlee Haskell trimmed the UNCP deficit back to 60-55 at the seven minute mark. The Braves continued to cut away at their deficit and trailed 68-67 after a JaJuan Carr layup with 38 seconds left on the clock. UNCP got a big stop on defense an JaJuan Carr made one of his two free throw attempts at the end of regulation to send the game into overtime. 

OVERTIME
JaJuan Carr's layup at 3:18 gave UNC Pembroke its largest lead of the contest, 72-70, but Lenoir-Rhyne quickly answered and tied the game at 72 with a Zaire Wells layup. The Bears scored four-straight points to lead 76-73 with 1:15 left on the clock, but the Braves were held to 2-for-6 from the field and were 2-for-5 from the free throw line during the overtime period. 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
+ Bradlee Haskell finished with a game-best 22 points while dishing out five assists in 41 minutes of work.
+ JaJuan Carr turned in a 19-point showing and was 8-for-15 from the field.
+ Dallas Gardner chipped in 17 points after a 6-for-11 showing from the floor. 
NOTABLES
+ Senior Bradlee Haskell and sophomore Dallas Gardner were both named to the NCAA Southeast Region team.
+ Both teams shot 44.3 percent from the floor. However, UNCP went 15-for-27 from the free throw line. 
+ Lenoir-Rhyne held the lead for 88.7 percent of Tuesday's contest. 
+ The Black & Gold scored 24 points from 15 LR turnovers.
