Hot Bats Help Softball By Shorter

MAXTON - Shorter and UNC Pembroke both recorded 22 hits across the two games, but Shorter stranded 21 base runners as the UNC Pembroke softball team swept Shorter on Friday afternoon at the Purnell Swett Softball Field. 
 
The Braves put up four runs in the bottom of the third inning and used doubles from Alona Hanna and Katie Hogue, along with a trip from Hanna to help the team to an 8-2 victory in game one of the doubleheader. 
 
Shorter tallied a trio of runs in the top of the fourth inning of game two, but a four-run fifth inning from UNCP helped secure the sweep with a 9-5 victory.

KEY INNINGS (GAME 1)
BOT 3 Kaitlynn Hunt got the inning started with a single to left field followed by a double to center field from Alona Hanna. Samantha Allred reached via a bunt and an ill-timed error from Shorter scored both Hunt and Hanna. Katie Hogue smacked an RBI double to center field and would score on a single up the middle from Marijo Wilkes. 
BOT 6 Kylie Johnson singled up the middle and advanced to third on a single through the right side from Kynley Brewer. Alex Serbio scored Johnson, as Alona Hanna scored Brewer with an RBI single. 
KEY INNINGS (GAME 2)
TOP 4 Abby Brown got a leadoff double to left field and would advance to third on a sacrifice bunt from Katie Williams. A single up the middle from Anna Sanders scored Brown. The Hawks loaded the bases via a Kiley Arnold walk and an error by the Braves. Ashton Stevens drew a walk to bring home a runner, following by a fielder's choice from Alex Hollingsworth to score Arnold and tie the score at 3-3. 
BOT 4 UNCP put runners on first and second after a Cayden Thomas single and Kyie Johnson drew a walk. Kynley Brewer beat out an infield single, but errors from Shorter allowed both runners to score and give the Braves a 5-3 lead. 
BOT 5 Samantha Allred started the inning with a single to the outfield gap followed by an RBI single down the left field line from Marijo Wilkes. UNCP loaded the bases after Cayden Thomas was hit by a pitch and Kylie Johnson drew a walk, but Kynley Brewer put the ball in play to bring home a pair of runners. Alex Serbio knocked an RBI single to left field to cap off the three-run inning.
