Women’s Basketball Falls To Young Harris In Overtime Of Conference Quarterfinals

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The UNC Pembroke women's basketball team was limited to just 2-for-11 shooting during overtime and fell 75-67 to Young Harris in the quarterfinals of the Atlantic Casualty Insurance Conference Carolinas Tournament on Friday at Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium. 
 
The setback for the Braves (22-8) snapped a three-game winning streak and have now lost the last two contests to Young Harris. The Mountain Lions (22-8) have now won their last nine games and will advance to the semifinals on Saturday against Francis Marion. 




 
THE BASICS
SCORE: Young Harris 75, UNC Pembroke 67

HOW IT HAPPENED
1ST QUARTER
UNC Pembroke took an early 5-0 lead with a jumper from Hannah Russell and a triple from Stella Mollica, but Young Harris evened the score at five with a triple and a jumper from Kamryn Bates.  A 9-4 surge from the Mountain Lions put YHC in front 14-9 with 2:33 left in the period. Zaria Clark made good on a bucket to end the period as UNCP trailed 18-14 at the end of the first quarter. 
2ND QUARTER
Baskets from Zaria Clark and Kelci Adams knotted the score at 18, but a 6-0 run pushed the lead out to 24-18 for Young Harri with 6:18 remaining in the half. The Braves answered with a 6-0 run of their own to tie the score at 24 after a layup from Anastasia Sinclair with just under four minutes left in the half. UNCP outscored YHC 8-4 in the final minutes and used a bucket from Stella Mollica at the buzzer to hold a 32-28 lead as the teas headed into the locker rooms. 
3RD QUARTER
UNC Pembroke extended its lead out to 35-28 after a free throw from Zaria Clark, but a 10-0 run gave Young Harris a 38-35 advantage with 3:56 on the clock. A Maya Hood jumper and a triple from Kelci Adams gave the Braves a slight 45-44 lead, but a pair of free throws gave the Mountain Lions a 46-45 lead heading into the final stanza. 
4TH QUARTER
Young Harris extended its lead out to 51-47, but triples from Stella Mollica and Kelci Adams sent UNC Pembroke on a 10-0 run to lead 57-51with 3:57 left to play in regulation. The Mountain Lions tied the score at 59 apiece with 16 seconds left after a 10-2 run, but the Braves had a final look during regulation and couldn't capitalize. 
OVERTIME
The Braves held a 65-63 advantage after a pair of free throws from Kelci Adams, Young Harris took a 66-65 lead with a three from Ivona Miljanic with 2:47 on the clock. UNCP was just 2-for-11 from the field during overtime as the Mountain Lions made good on 9-of-14 free throw attempts. 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
+ Kelci Adams finished with a team-high 14 points and 12 rebounds for her eighth double-double. The graduate student played 40 minutes and had a pair of assists. 
+ Zaria Clark also logged a double-double with 12 points and 11 boards. The senior dished out three assists and have one steal in 43 minutes of work. 
+ Stella Mollica finished with 13 points and six assists. The senior pulled down four defensive rebounds as well. 
NOTABLES
UNC Pembroke shot 35.6 percent from the field while Young Harris was 36.4 percent from the field. 
+ The Mountain Lions outscored the Braves 40-26 with points inside the paint. YHC was also 23-for-33 from the free throw line, as UNCP was 11-for-15 from the charity stripe. 
+ The Black & Gold posted a 49-46 advantage on the glass and scored 12 second chance points.
