Baseball Sweeps Doubleheader, Takes Series Over No. 23 Francis Marion

FLORENCE, S.C. – UNC Pembroke rallied back from three-run deficits in each end of the doubleheader on the way to a series win over 23rd-ranked Francis Marion by scores of 4-3 and 6-5 on Saturday at CarolinaBank Field.

Seth Willis picked up the save in each victory, combining for four innings pitched across the doubleheader while also also racking up 10 strikeouts.

Blake Hinson was 2-3 with three RBI in Game 2, including a go-ahead two-run single in the fourth inning. Isaias Villarreal provided the go-ahead RBI single in Game 3, while turning in a 2-3 outing in the finale.

The Braves (23-18, 11-13 CC) moved to 50-76-1 in the all-time series with the Patriots (32-11, 19-8 CC), while also snapping a 13-game Francis Marion winning streak in the first game of the doubleheader.

UNCP will be back in action Tuesday, April 15 as they host Catawba for a non-conference matchup. Due to construction delays at Sammy Cox Field, the game will be held at CarolinaBank Field in Florence, S.C. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.

KEY INNINGS (GAME 1)
TOP 2 Francis Marion struck first on a three-run home run from Noah Stout.
BOT 2 Morgan Padgett extended the frame with a two-out single, followed by a single from Ashton Donathan. Ramses Cordova got the Braves on the board with an RBI single to score Padgett, while Blake Hinson followed with an RBI single to make it 3-2.
BOT 4 Isaias Villarreal led off with a double, followed by a Padgett walk. Donathan's sac bunt put runners at second and third, while Hinson cashed in a two-strike, two-run single up the middle to give UNCP a 4-3 lead.
TOP 7 Seth Willis put the game to bed with authority, striking out the side to even the series.
KEY INNINGS (GAME 2)
TOP 4 FMU would take the first lead of the game on a two-RBI single from Jimmy Koza, while another Patriot run would come on an error to make it 3-0.
BOT 4 The Braves would counter once more, as Hayden Davis worked a leadoff walk and moved to second on Jake Bradley's single. Will Hood followed with an RBI single to score Davis, before Isaias Villarreal reached on a bunt single to load the bases. Bradley would race home on a wild pitch, while Landon Lucas drove in Hood with an RBI groundout. Ramses Cordova gave UNCP the lead with a sac fly to score Villarreal to make it 4-3.
TOP 6 FMU's Rayth Petersen singled and would eventually come home on a Will Dorrell RBI single to tie the game at 4-4.
BOT 8 Hood doubled and came home to score on Villarreal's seeing-eye single to put the Braves back ahead 5-4. Lucas doubled and scored on an RBI single from Cordova for a key insurance run to make it 6-4.
TOP 9 Dorrell sent the first pitch of the ninth over the right-field wall to make it 6-5, but Seth Willis struck out the next three batters to put a bow on the doubleheader sweep and nail down his second save of the day.
