Softball Extends Win Streak, Sweeps Chowan On Senior Day

MAXTON - The UNC Pembroke softball team picked up its fourth consecutive sweep on Saturday with a series victory over Chowan for senior day at Purnell Swett High School. 
 
The Braves put up a trio of runs during two innings and limited the Hawks to just two hits to take the opening game of the series 7-3. 
 
UNCP registered six hits in game two, but an RBI single up the middle from Kaitlynn Hunt in the bottom of the eighth inning proved to be the difference.

KEY INNINGS (GAME 1)
BOT 4 Katie Hogue got the inning started with a double to the outfield gap and scored on a single to right field from Kylie Johnson. Kynley Brewer knocked a single up the middle followed by a two-run single up the middle from Kaitlynn Hunt to put the Braves in front 6-1.  
TOP 6 Chowan put runners on first and second after a throwing error by UNCP and a walk. Both runners advanced a base on a groundout, but an ill-timed wild pitch scored a runner. L Bryson drove home another runner to cut the Chowan deficit back to 7-3. 
KEY INNINGS (GAME 2)
BOT 2 Marijo Wilkes singled to right field and would advance to third on a fielding error. Chloe Locklear drove home Wilkes on a groundout to give UNCP a 1-0 lead. 
TOP 6 Chowan loaded the bases as Ava Mizell was hit by a pitch and Lenita Bryson and Makenzi Curry both drew walks. An ill-timed wild pitch scored Mizell to tie the game. 
BOT 8 With the International tiebreaker rule in play, Kynley Brewer started the inning on second base. Brewer moved to third on a wild pitch and would score on an RBI single form Kaitlynn Hunt.

The Braves will play their final game of the regular season when they host No. 4 Francis Marion on Wednesday. First pitch of the doubleheader is slated for 4 p.m. at Purnell Swett High School.
