Baseball Drops Twinbill, Swept By Belmont Abbey

FLORENCE, S.C. – The UNC Pembroke offense was stifled by Belmont Abbey pitchers, as the Braves combined to score just five runs in the doubleheader and dropped both games by scores of 3-1 and 7-4 Saturday afternoon at CarolinaBank Field.

Jonathon Jacobs picked up another tough-luck loss in Game 2, going all seven innings and allowing just three runs on three hits, to go along with eight strikeouts.

The Black & Gold took a 4-3 lead after six complete in Game 3, before Belmont Abbey would score four unanswered runs to complete the sweep.

The Braves (21-16, 9-12 CC) dropped to 22-22 in the all-time series with the Crusaders (27-12, 17-7 CC), while also ending its streak of three-straight series wins over Belmont Abbey.

UNCP will be back in action Tuesday, April 8 as they make the short trip to take on Wingate. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. at Ron Christopher Stadium.

TOP 2 Belmont Abbey struck first as Jackson Risk worked a leadoff walk and would eventually score on a wild pitch to make it 1-0.
BOT 2 The Braves answered right back, using a Jake Bradley solo homer to tie the score at 1-1.
TOP 7 After a Connor Tucker solo homer in the sixth gave the Crusaders the lead, Todd Velotta led off the seventh with a solo homer to make it 3-1.
KEY INNINGS (GAME 2)
BOT 4 Will Hood singled, stole second, and came around to score on a Hayden Davis RBI single to give the Braves a 1-0 lead.
TOP 5 Belmont Abbey would take the lead on a three-run triple from Connor Tucker to give the Crusaders a 3-1 lead.
BOT 6 Blake Hinson and Luis Ramirez each singled to lead off the inning, before Hinson would steal third and come home on a throwing error, while Hood would drive in Ramirez to tie the game at 3-3. Jake Bradley's sac fly to score Hood gave the Braves a 4-3 lead.
TOP 7 The Crusaders would take the lead for good in the seventh, scoring three runs on two hits and two UNCP errors to make it 6-4.
