Softball Sweeps Mount Olive For Autism Awareness Series

MAXTON - The UNC Pembroke softball registered 21 hits across two games on they way to its third consecutive sweep on Wednesday by winning a pair of games over Mount Olive for the Autism Awareness Series at Purnell Swett High School. 
 
The Trojans capitalized on four UNCP errors and took an early 2-0 lead, but the Braves rallied back and scored in three consecutive innings to win the opening contest 4-3. 
 
The Black & Gold wasted no time in the back half of the doubleheader scoring multiple runs in every inning, including putting up six runs in the bottom the third inning.

KEY INNINGS (GAME 1)
TOP 2 Brittany Stephens got the inning started with a leadoff single followed by a Sophia Gleim walk. Alyssa Smothers smacked a bases clearing double to left field to give the Trojans an early 2-0 lead. 
BOT 5 Katie Hogue singled to the outfield game and would move to third on a single to center field from Kylie Johnson, who would advance to second on the throw. Kynley Brewer scored Hogue with a sacrifice fly followed by an RBI single up the middle from Kaitlynn Hunt
KEY INNINGS (GAME 2)
TOP 2 Mount Olive put runners on first and second after McKenzie Millard reached on a walk and Alyssa Smothers drew a walk, but Samantha Taylor lit up the scoreboard with a three-run homer over the center field fence. 
BOT 3 Marijo Wilkes got the inning started with a leadoff home run over the left field fence. UNCP would load the bases after a Katie Hogue double and Kynley Brewer and Alex Serbio each drew a walk. Kaitlynn Hunt brought home a run after being hit by a pitch, as Alona Hanna tallied an RBI with a walk. An ill-timed fielding error by UMO allowed Samantha Allred to plate a run, followed by a two-run single up the middle from Marijo Wilkes

The Braves honor their five-member senior class on Saturday against Chowan. First pitch of the doubleheader is set for 2 p.m. at Purnell Swett High School. Senior day festivities will begin prior to the start of the first game.
