Football Opens Conference Play With Victory Over Ferrum

PEMBROKE - The UNC Pembroke football team allowed just 182 offensive yards to highlight a 41-14 victory over Ferrum in the Conference Carolinas opener at Grace P. Johnson Stadium on Saturday evening. 

The Braves (3-1, 1-0 CC) have now won their last three contests and marks the best start to the season since the 2016 season. The setback for the Panthers (1-3, 0-1 CC) fall to 0-3 when playing on the road this year.

HOW IT HAPPENED
1ST QUARTER
UNC Pembroke capitalized on a blocked punt by Justin Foreman in the first quarter to gain favorable field position at Ferrum's 18-yard line. Tre Robinson then connected with Anthony Greene for a 9-yard touchdown pass at 4:34, putting UNCP up 7-0 after a successful extra point by Taylor Harris. Ferrum struggled to maintain momentum, with Eli Foutz suffering multiple sacks, including a 6-yard loss by Jadin Baptist and Marquis Raspberry. UNC Pembroke's defense held firm, allowing just two first downs and keeping the Panthers off the scoreboard as the quarter concluded.
2ND QUARTER
The Braves opened the quarter with a dominant drive, highlighted by Tre Robinson's 37-yard pass to JaQuan Albright, setting up Devyn Grant's subsequent 15-yard run. Tre Robinson then connected with Jackson Karcher for a 25-yard touchdown, extending the lead to 14-0 wtih 14 minutes left to play in the half. Taylor Harris added a 22-yard field goal at 6:16, capitalizing on a stalled drive. Late in the period, a fumble by Ferrum's Jahylen Lee, forced by Marquis Raspberry, allowed Adeyemi Odugba to recover at the Ferrum 1-yard line, leading to a touchdown by Devyn Grant with 2:19 remaining, solidifying UNC Pembroke's commanding 24-0 advantage as the teams headed into the locker room.
3RD QUARTER
Tre Robinson orchestrated a drive that opened with a 50-yard rush by Devyn Grant, setting up Tre Robinson for a 6-yard rush to convert a crucial third down and later an 11-yard touchdown run, pushing the score to 31-0 at the 10:28 mark. On their subsequent possession, Tre Robinson connected with Malik Brown on a 34-yard touchdown pass at 6:32, increasing the lead to 38-0. Ferrum's attempts to respond were stifled, highlighted by a sack from Isi Etute, as they struggled to gain momentum against the Black & Gold's defense.
4TH QUARTER
The fourth quarter began with Ferrum on a determined drive, advancing 26 yards with Eli Foutz completing a crucial 7-yard pass to BJ Tate-Blanks for a first down at 14:45. Despite a setback with a 3-yard loss, Eli Foutz managed to connect with Ryan Dodson for a 12-yard gain, setting up Ferrum at the UNC Pembroke 8-yard line. Jahylen Lee rushed to the 1-yard line, but was stopped short twice, but Jycen Anciso powered through for a 1-yard touchdown, narrowing the score to 38-7 after Jon Davis's successful kick. Later, UNC Pembroke responded with a 47-yard field goal by Harris at 5:03, extending their lead to 41-14. Ferrum's final push included Anciso's 13-yard touchdown run. 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
+ Tre Robinson completed 12 of his 16 passes for 212 yards and three touchdowns. The sophomore ran the ball eight times for 49 yards and one touchdown. 
+ Jadin Baptist finished the contest with eight tackles, four of which were solo tackles. The Aberdeen native had a half sack for a loss of three yards as well. 
+ Isi Etute added five solo tackles and one tackle assist during Saturday's victory. The redshirt junior had 2.5 tackles for a loss of eight yards and 1.5 sacks for five yards. 
+ Taylor Harris was a perfect 2-for-2 on field goal attempts highlighted by a 47-yard field goal and made all five extra point attempts. 
NOTABLES
 + The Braves tallied 237 passing yards during Saturday's victory and held Ferrum to just 66 passing yards. 
+ UNCP allowed just 182 yards of offense during the victory which is the fewest offense yards allowed since September 8, 2018.
+ The Braves converted on 7-of-11 attempts on third down, while - the Panthers were held to just 5-of-17 on third down attempts. 
+ UNC Pembroke had seven sacks for a loss of 36 yards on Saturday. 
UP NEXT
The Braves will hit the road on Saturday and step out of conference play when they face Valdosta State. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m. at Bazemore-Hyder Stadium.
