No. 24 Wrestling Goes 3-1 At Fairmont State Duals

FAIRMONT, W. VA. – 24th-ranked UNC Pembroke picked up wins over Salem, Fairmont State, and Felician, while dropping its lone bout to fifth-ranked Pitt-Johnstown at the Fairmont State Duals Sunday afternoon inside the Feaster Center.

Avery Buonocore and 12th-ranked Keegan Roberson each turned in perfect 4-0 days on the mat, combining to log eight bonus-point wins.

Don Edwards, Caleb Grau, Jackson Buck, and Cristian Hercules-Pleitez each logged three wins, combining for ten bonus-point victories.

The Black & Gold will jump back into Conference Carolinas dual action on January 15, as they head to Mount Olive for a crucial division match against the Trojans. Wrestling action is slated to begin at 7 p.m. inside Kornegay Arena.



#24 UNCP VS. SALEM (W, 56-0)

Cooper Davis (125), Sam Hutchison (133), and Don Edwards (141) each won via pin to give the Braves a quick 18-0 lead. After a forfeit win at 149 pounds from Avery Buonocore, Keegan Roberson won via technical fall in the 157-pound bout, with Caleb Grau taking a decision win at 165 pounds to stretch the lead to 32-0. UNCP won by forfeit at 174 and 285 pounds, with pins from Jose Zambrano Canuto (184) and Jackson Buck (197) in between to take the 56-0 win.
 

#24 UNCP VS. #5 PITT-JOHNSTOWN (L, 30-16)

UPJ jumped out to a quick 10-0 lead after the first two bout, but Don Edwards answered with a decision win at 141 pounds, followed by a major decision from Avery Buonocore in the 149-pound bout to cut the deficit to 10-7. Keegan Roberson gave the Braves a 13-10 lead with a first-period pin at 157 pounds, but the Mountain Cats countered with two straight wins to jump back ahead 18-13. Quintez Shipman won via decision at 184 pounds, but UPJ picked up back-to-back pins to close the match and take the 30-16 win.


#24 UNCP AT FAIRMONT STATE (W, 32-16)

Fairmont State took an early 9-0 lead, but bonus-point wins from Don Edwards (141), Avery Buonocore (149), and Keegan Roberson (157) gave the Braves a 14-9 lead. Caleb Grau won via injury at 165 pounds to stretch the lead to 20-9, before the Falcons took wins at 174 and 184 pounds to make it 20-16. Jackson Buck put the match away with a pin in the 197-pound bout, while Cristian Hercules-Pleitez put a bow on it with a first-period pin at 285 pounds to take the 32-16 win.


#24 UNCP VS. FELICIAN (W, 38-14)

Cooper Davis got the Braves on the board first with a first-period pin at 125 pounds, before Felician won two straight bouts to jump ahead 11-6. Avery Buonocore (149) stayed perfect on the day with a first-period pin, while Keegan Roberson (157) followed with a pin of his own to put the Black & Gold back ahead 18-11. Caleb Grau logged a major decision at 165 pounds to stretch the lead to 22-11, while the Golden Falcons took the 174-pound bout to cut the score to 22-14. UNCP would close the dual with three straight bonus-point wins from Quintez Shipman (184), Jackson Buck (197), and Cristian Hercules-Pleitez (285) to close out the day with a 38-14 win.
