Sharp-Shooting Women's Basketball Rattles Belmont Abbey

PEMBROKE The UNC Pembroke women's basketball team shot an impressive 45.1 percent from the field and held the lead for 48.8 percent of the contest to help fuel a 61-55 victory over Belmont Abbey on Saturday afternoon at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court.

The Braves (4-9, 4-2 CC) improve to 12-8 all-time against Belmont Abbey and are now 6-3 when playing BAC in Pembroke. The setback for the Crusaders (10-4, 5-2 CC) marks their second consecutive loss and have now lost three out of their last four games.

HOW IT HAPPENED
1ST QUARTER
Riley James of Belmont Abbey scored a layup at 6:07 putting the Crusaders on the board first. UNC Pembroke responded with Shaymiah Bailey's jumper at 5:36, leveling the score at 2-2. James continued to be a key player for Belmont Abbey, contributing multiple points, including a layup the five minute mark to give BAC a 4-2 lead. Both teams exchanged baskets in the remaining minutes of the first period, but Belmont Abbey held a 13-10 advantage at the end of the quarter.
2ND QUARTER
Grace Ikenegbu initiated a 7-0 UNCP surge to push the hosts lead out to 17-13 with 7:55 on the clock. The Crusaders responded with a three-pointer from Sofia McNabb at 7:32, closing the gap to 17-16. The quarter remained competitive, culminating in a tied score of 26-26 after Camille Kerridge hit a three-pointer with just 43 seconds left. However, McNabb scored the final basket of the quarter with 22 seconds remaining, securing a 28-26 lead for the Crusaders as the teams headed into the locker room. 
3RD QUARTER
In the third quarter, the Braves outscored the Crusaders 18-10, seizing momentum with efficient shooting and strong defense. Natalie Evington's two three-pointers, including one at 4:49 helped push UNCP ahead 36-35. Tiana Spann contributed significantly with multiple layups, and her defensive and offensive rebounds further bolstered the lead. The Braves closed out the period on an 8-3 surge to hold a 44-38 lead heading into the final period. 
4TH QUARTER
UNC Pembroke maintained a steady lead throughout the fourth quarter, securing a 61-55 victory over Belmont Abbey. Grace Ikenegbu opened the quarter with a jumper at 9:02, giving the Braves a 46-38 advantage. Bre'Asia Washington and Tiana Spann contributed key baskets, with Washington completing a three-point play at 1:55, extending the lead to 56-46. Despite a late push by the visitors, including a three-pointer by Reagan Iovino with 30 seconds remaining, the Braves responded with free throws from Anastasia Sinclair to seal the win. 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
+ Shaymiah Bailey came off of the bench to turn in a game-best 13 points on a 4-for-9 shooting performance. The freshman grabbed six rebounds and had one steal in 24 minutes of work.
+ Tiana Spann tallied her second double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds. The redshirt senior added two assists and one block as well. 
+ Grace Ikenegbu flirted with a double-double with eight points and eight defensive rebounds. 
NOTABLES
+ UNC Pembroke shot 45.1 percent from the field, which marked the second-best shooting performance this season.
+ The Braves limited Belmont Abbey to just 31.3 percent shooting which marked second-lowest shooting performance this season.
+ The Black & Gold scored 20 points from 14 Belmont Abbey turnovers. 
+ The Crusaders finished just 3-for-17 from the perimeter.

The Braves will trek to Murfreesboro on Wednesday as they battle with Chowan. Tipoff is set for 5 p.m. at Bob Burke Court.
