Women's Basketball Falls At Chowan

PEMBROKE Chowan scored 27 second chance points and 52 points in the paint to help fuel a 71-56 victory over the UNC Pembroke women's basketball team on Wednesday evening at Bob Burke Court. 

The Braves (4-10, 4-3 CC) fall to 1-6 when playing on the road this season. The Hawks (7-6, 5-4 CC) have now won the last four games and improve to 5-4 when playing at home.

HOW IT HAPPENED
1ST QUARTER
Bre'Asia Washington put the Braves on the board first with a free throw at 9:49, but Chowan responded quickly with a jumper by Wisdom Banks at 9:33. Chowan's defensive pressure was evident with three steals, including one by Desiree Askew with 25 seconds left in the quarter, leading to a layup by Banks at 6:52. Towards the end, Nyeisha Savage extended their lead with a jumper with five seconds on the clock, closing the quarter at 15-7.
2ND QUARTER
Chowan capitalized on turnovers and efficient shooting to extend their lead in the second quarter. Savage contributed with a jumper at 9:31 to set an early tone. Bre'Asia Washington responded for the Braves with back-to-back layups, but Chowan maintained control with Banks scoring a layup in the paint with 2:14 remaining, part of her strong performance. Anastasia Sinclair managed a jumper at the 1:19 mark, but Chowan finished the quarter on top with a final layup by Banks at the buzzer, concluding the quarter with a 28-15 advantage.
3RD QUARTER
The Hawks maintained their lead in the third quarter, outscoring the Braves 22-20. Grace Ikenegbu's early layup reduced the gap slightly, making it 43-24 at 9:30. Tiana Spann contributed consistently, adding a layup and a free throw to her tally. However, Chowan responded with a strong performance in the paint, highlighted by Banks' layup at 3:01, extending the hosts advantage to 61-37. Anastasia Sinclair hit a late three-pointer with 1:26 on the clock, but Chowan kept control, concluding the quarter with a 65-42 lead.
4TH QUARTER
In the final quarter, the Braves outscored Chowan 14-6, but the Hawks maintained their lead to secure the win. Tiana Spann played a notable defensive role with a block and two steals for the Braves. Anastasia Sinclair led her team in scoring during the quarter, contributing seven points, including a layup at 3:13 that also resulted in a free throw. Bre'Asia Washington added a fastbreak jumper with 49 seconds left, but it was not enough to close the gap. Chowan's defense held strong, with Jade Clowney recording a crucial steal in the final minutes. 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
+ Anastasia Sinclair finished with a team-best 20 points on a 7-for-12 shooting performance. 
+ Bre'Asia Washington added 15 points after shooting 5-for-7 from the floor. Washington added one assist, one block and one steal in 28 minutes of work.
+ Grace Ikenegbu went 4-for-7 from the floor and nearly registered a double-double with eight points and nine rebounds.
NOTABLES
+ UNC Pembroke shot 41.2 percent from the field, while Chowan shot 45.7 percent from the floor. 
+ The Hawks outscored the Braves 28-15 in the second quarter.
+ CU outscored UNCP 52-32 with points in the paint and scored 27 second chance points compared to the nine UNCP second chance points.
+ Chowan tallied 19 offensive rebounds.

The Braves will continue their road trip on Saturday when they travel to Due West, S.C. to face Erskine. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. inside Belk Arena.
