Women's Basketball Holds Off Erskine

DUE WEST, S.C. The UNC Pembroke women's basketball scored 21 second chance points and had four players score in double figures to hold off a late run from Erskine and defeat the Flying Fleet 69-67 on Saturday afternoon inside Belk Arena. 

The Braves (5-10, 5-3 CC) have now won two out of their last three games and improve to 7-0 against Erskine. The Flying Fleet (1-12, 0-7 CC) have now lost their last 12 games and fall to 1-6 when playing at home.

HOW IT HAPPENED
1ST QUARTER
The first quarter began with Tiana Spann scoring a layup for an early lead for UNC Pembroke. Bre'Asia Washington followed up with a steal and fastbreak layup, pushing the Braves ahead 4-0. Erskine answered with five straight points to lead 5-4, however, a late surge by Grace Ikenegbu, who scored four points in the final minute, including a layup with 36 seconds remaining gave UNCP a 17-16 lead after the first period. 
2ND QUARTER
Natalie Evington led a strong second quarter for the Braves, highlighted by a fastbreak three-pointer at 2:27 that extended their lead over Erskine. Evington totaled three 3-pointers in the period, contributing significantly to a 17-point quarter. Bre'Asia Washington also added to the effort with a layup at 7:24. Despite Erskine's efforts, including a pair of free throws by Kaela Ward and a layup from Janiya Adams, the UNCP defensive pressure generated five steals, helping them maintain a 34-27 advantage by halftime.
3RD QUARTER
In the third quarter, UNC Pembroke extended their lead over Erskine, finishing the period ahead by one point. Keziyah Sanders contributed with a successful layup at 8:05 to put UNC Pembroke out in front 36-29. Grace Ikenegbu added four points, including a jumper at 4:22 to extend the lead out to 44-30. Despite Genesis Young's efforts for the Flying Fleet with a layup at 8:23, they trailed throughout the quarter. Ahrianna Scott scored four points late in the period, but Shaymiah Bailey's jumper with 1:03 remaining solidified the UNCP advantage. The quarter concluded with the Braves leading 48-40 heading into the final period.
4TH QUARTER
In a tense final quarter, UNC Pembroke held off the Flying Fleet to secure a narrow victory, 69-67. Scott opened the scoring with a jumper just 10 seconds into the period, cutting the Erskine deficit back to 48-42. Bre'Asia Washington's jumper at 8:27 extended the UNC Pembroke lead to 54-46. Despite the Flying Fleet's efforts, including Wilson's three-pointer narrowing the gap to 61-60 with 4:15 remaining, Anastasia Sinclair's late jumper and free throw at 2:35 proved decisive. Erskine tried for a final shot at the buzzer that didn't fall to secure the UNCP victory. 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
+ Grace Ikenegbu posted her first double-double of the season matching a career-high with 15 points. The junior grabbed 11 rebounds while adding one assist and one steal in 35 minutes of work.
+ Natalie Evington came off of the bench to turn in 11 points while also logging four rebounds.
+ Bre'Asia Washington also tallied 11 points on a 5-for-10 shooting performance. The junior finished with a team-high four steals and also grabbed four rebounds.
 
NOTABLES
+ UNC Pembroke shot 40.0 percent from the field, while Erskine shot 40.7 percent from the floor. 
+ The Black & Gold were just 9-of-18 from the free throw line, while the Flying Fleet finished the game going 15-for-21 from the charity stripe. 
+ UNCP logged 22 offensive rebounds and converted those into 21 points.
+ The Braves held the lead for 76.6 percent of Saturday's contest. 
UP NEXT
The Braves will return to action at home on Monday when they host Converse for Military Appreciation Day. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court and fans are encouraged to wear black.
