Second Half Surge Lifts Women's Basketball By Converse

PEMBROKE – The UNC Pembroke women's basketball shot 45.5 percent from the field and had every player score to highlight a 68-50 victory over Converse on Monday afternoon at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court. 

The Braves (6-10, 6-3 CC) have now won their last two games and improve to 4-0 when playing Converse in Pembroke. The Valkyries (1-17, 0-10 CC) have now lost their last seven games and fall to 0-11 when playing on the road this season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
1ST QUARTER
The opening quarter between UNC Pembroke and Converse commenced with a fast-paced exchange, as both teams vied for early control. Bre'Asia Washington put UNC Pembroke on the board first with a free throw at 9:35. Converse responded with Tatiana Brown scoring consistently, including a 3-pointer at 6:02, giving the Valkyries a 7-3 lead. However, Tiana Spann's efforts in the paint, netting layups at 3:02 and 2:32, knotted the game at 12. In the final minute, Natalie Evington knocked down a three-pointer at 1:02, followed by another layup from Bre'Asia Washington with 35 seconds on the clock, securing a 17-12 lead for UNC Pembroke by the end of the first quarter.
2ND QUARTER
London Vaughn initiated the scoring with a layup at the 8:08 mark, bringing Converse within three points. Natalie Evington responded for the Braves with a three-pointer at 7:54, pushing the UNCP lead to 20-14. Emma Kanz of Converse contributed with a layup at 6:38, cutting the deficit to two points. The quarter ended with Tatiana Brown's layup with two seconds left to send the teams to the locker rooms with the Braves holding a slight 28-26 advantage. 
3RD QUARTER
The Braves built momentum in the third quarter with a series of successful shots. Keziyah Sanders initiated the scoring with a jumper at 7:57 to spark UNCP on a 6-0 run to extend their lead out to 35-26 following a fastbreak layup from Bre'Asia Washington. Converse stopped the run with free throws from Vaughn at 6:07, to cut their deficit back to 35-28. Grace Ikenegbu extended the lead for UNC Pembroke with two free throws at 2:56, and Bre'Asia Washington capped the quarter with a layup with 35 seconds on the clock, closing the quarter at 43-38 heading into the final period. 
4TH QUARTER
The Braves secured a decisive victory against Converse with a strong performance in the final quarter, outscoring their opponent 25-12. Breanna Perry was instrumental, hitting two three-pointers early, including one at the 7:40 mark on a fastbreak, putting the Braves ahead 51-38. Anastasia Sinclair also contributed significantly with a three-pointer at 6:53, extending the lead to 54-38. Converse attempted to rally, but the UNCP defensive efforts, including a block by Shaymiah Bailey and several key rebounds, maintained the home team's advantage. The game concluded with Shaymiah Bailey sinking two free throws with 19 seconds remaining, sealing the win at 68-50.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
+ Bre'Asia Washington finished with a team-best 13 points on a 6-for-11 shooting performance. The junior dished out a career-high six assists, while grabbing three rebounds in 26 minutes of action.
+ Anastasia Sinclair chipped in 10 points highlighted by a 2-for-3 clip from the perimeter. Sinclair grabbed four rebounds, logged four assists and had one block. 
+ Natalie Evington added nine points with a trio of three pointers, while Keziyah Sanders pulled down seven defensive rebounds. 
NOTABLES
+ UNC Pembroke shot 45.5 percent from the field which marked the second-best shooting performance this season. UNCP has shot 40 percent or better from the field in the last four games.
+ The Black & Gold limited Converse to 32.8 percent shooting which marked the worst shooting outing in the last seven games.
+ The Braves picked up 27 points from its bench with every player scoring during Monday's victory. 
+ UNCP posted a 42-30 advantage in rebounds, and picked up 14 points from nine offensive rebounds.
UP NEXT
The Braves will hit the road on Wednesday when they travel to face Mount Olive. Tipoff is set for 5 p.m. inside Kornegay Arena.
