Softball Sweeps Davis & Elkins For Opening Day

PEMBROKE – The UNC Pembroke softball team posted double-digit hits in both games to help fuel a non-conference sweep over Davis & Elkins on Friday afternoon to open the season at Willoughby Softball Field. 

UNCP used five extra base hits and a home run from Emma Wrenn in game one to defeat the Senators 12-4 in five innings. The Braves completed the sweep with a 12-4 victory in game two highlighted by a pinch hit grand slam from Makayla Etling in the bottom of fifth inning to cap off the 10-run inning.

KEY INNINGS (GAME 1)
TOP 4 Davis & Elkins loaded the bases with a pair of singles and a walk, but a single from Gweny Wessling to right field scored one run for the Senators. Madison Smith drove in a run with a single to center field, followed by walks from Cayden Warfield and Cortney Dobbs to give D&E and 4-3 lead. 
BOT 4 The Braves put runners on the corners after Kaitlyn King was hit by a pitch and stole second, and would advance to third on a single from Alex Serbio. Alona Hanna knocked a triple to the outfield game to score a pair of runs, followed by an RBI single from Kaitlynn Hunt. Chloe Locklear smacked a double into center field to score Hunt, and Locklear would score on a wild pitch. 
BOT 5 Maddie Gerovac singled down the left field line and would score on a double to center field from Megan Ellis. Alex Serbio would drive in Ellis, and an ill-timed throwing error on a single from Kaitlynn Hunt would score two more runners for the final score. 
KEY INNINGS (GAME 2)
BOT 5 UNCP had runners on the corners after a leadoff single from Alex Serbio followed by a single to left field from Emma Wrenn. Kaitlynn Hunt smacked a single to third that would score Serbio followed by an RBI single up the middle from Summer Bullard. The Braves would load the bases, but Makayla Etling came in the pinch hit and sent one out of the park for a grand slam.
