Women's Basketball Downs Southern Wesleyan

PEMBROKE – The UNC Pembroke women's basketball team shot 48.3 percent from the field and scored 25 second chance points to fuel a 78-69 victory over Southern Wesleyan on Saturday afternoon at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court. 

The Braves (10-12, 10-5 CC) remain perfect against Southern Wesleyan with their ninth consecutive win. The Warriors (6-18, 4-12 CC) have now lost six out of their last seven contests and fall to 5-7 when playing on the road.

HOW IT HAPPENED
1ST QUARTER
The first quarter began with Southern Wesleyan's Peyton Looky hitting a three-pointer, setting an early tone. UNC Pembroke quickly responded, as Tiana Spann scored a layup at 9:10 and continued to dominate inside with multiple rebounds. Tiana Spann's scoring efforts were complemented by Shaymiah Bailey's successful free throws and a layup, keeping the Braves slightly ahead. Southern Wesleyan's Savanna Nicholson closed the gap with a fast-break layup at 00:43, but the home team held a narrow 14-13 lead by the end of the quarter.
2ND QUARTER
UNC Pembroke and Southern Wesleyan battled closely in the second quarter, with both teams exchanging leads multiple times. Emily Gamon initiated the scoring for the Warriors with a jumper, but Natalie Evington quickly responded with a three-pointer for the Braves at 9:19. Tiana Spann and Bre'Asia Washington combined for effective plays, with Tiana Spann scoring consecutive layups, extending the home lead to 23-17. Southern Wesleyan's Makayla Raines kept the visitors competitive, contributing crucial points and a late assist to Nicholson for a three-pointer, tying the game at 34 with 36 seconds left. However, Shaymiah Bailey secured the lead for UNC Pembroke with a layup and converted the subsequent free throw, ending the quarter 37-34 in favor of the home team.
3RD QUARTER
The Braves extended their lead in the third quarter with strong performances from Natalie Evington and Tiana Spann. Tiana Spann contributed with a layup and two free throws early in the quarter, while Natalie Evington added back-to-back three-pointers at the 6:06 and 5:37 marks, widening the gap. Southern Wesleyan's Nicholson managed a three-pointer to cut into the lead, but UNCP's Camille Kerridge responded with a three-pointer of her own. The quarter concluded with UNCP maintaining a 58-49 advantage, highlighted by a defensive rebound from Shaymiah Bailey as the clock expired.
4TH QUARTER
In the fourth quarter, UNC Pembroke maintained its lead over Southern Wesleyan, ultimately securing a 78-69 victory. Tiana Spann contributed with key defensive rebounds and scored a layup at 8:57 to extend the margin. The Warriors' Raines responded with a layup and consistent free-throw shooting, keeping the visitors within reach. A pivotal moment came at 4:53 when Natalie Evington sank a three-pointer to widen the lead to 67-57. As the clock wound down, Natalie Evington added three more points from the free-throw line with 28 seconds remaining, sealing the win for the Braves.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
+ Tiana Spann finished with a career-high 20 points on a 9-for-12 shooting performance. The redshirt senior posted her fourth double-double with 13 rebounds, 10 of which were on the defensive glass. 
+ Natalie Evington turned in 17 points after going 4-for-8 from the perimeter. Evington grabbed six defensive rebounds and had one assist in 31 minutes of work.
+ Shaymiah Bailey came off of the bench to add 15 points shooting 5-for-9 from the field. The freshman flirted with a double-double with nine rebounds, while also registering a pair of blocks and assists.
NOTABLES
+ UNC Pembroke shot 48.3 percent from the field while Southern Wesleyan shot 44.6 percent from the field. 
+ The Black & Gold picked up 24 points from its bench.
+ The Braves held a 44-22 advantage on the glass and pulled down 15 offensive boards. UNCP scored 25 second chance points.
+ UNCP held the lead for 80.8 percent of Saturday's victory. 
UP NEXT
The Braves will be back in action on Monday when they host Lees-McRae. Tipoff is set for 5 p.m. at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court.
