Baseball Beats Mercy, O'Neil Picks Up Career Win 900

PEMBROKE – UNC Pembroke scored in each of the first six innings on the way to a 13-9 win over Mercy in non-conference action Tuesday evening at Sammy Cox Field.

The win was head coach Paul O'Neil's 900th career victory, becoming just the eighth active Division II coach to reach the mark.

Daniel Stephens once again led the way offensively, turning in a 3-5 day with four RBI.


The Braves (8-1) improved to 3-1 all-time against the Mavericks (3-2).

The Black & Gold will be back in action Friday as they host Emmanuel for a Conference Carolinas series. First pitch is set for 4 p.m.

KEY INNINGS
BOT 1 The Braves struck first as Daniel Stephens reached on a leadoff single and eventually came home to score on a wild pitch. Morgan Padgett's sac fly scored Jacob Smith to make it 2-0.
TOP 3 Kolongi Goins RBI single was followed by a Dylan Koch three-run blast to give the Mavericks a 4-3 lead.
BOT 3 The Braves jumped back ahead on a wild pitch and RBI singles from Hayden Davis and Peyton Young to make it 6-4.
TOP 4 Mercy once again answered, using a Nevin Scaperotti two-run single to make it 6-6.
BOT 4 UNCP regained the lead on a Padgett RBI single, followed by a Tyler Steele RBI walk. Padgett eventually came home on a wild pitch to make it 9-6.
BOT 5 After scored twice in the top of the fifth, the Braves extended the lead with a two-run blast from Stephens to make it 11-8.
BOT 6 Stephens capped off his day with a two-run double to score Young and Ashton Donathan to stretch the lead to 13-8.
