Big Fourth Quarter Lifts Women's Basketball By Mount Olive

PEMBROKE – The UNC Pembroke women's basketball team held the lead for 97.6 percent of the contest and outscored Mount Olive 24-11 in the fourth quarter to knock off the Trojans 64-48 on Wednesday evening at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court. 

The Braves (11-13, 11-6 CC) remain perfect at home when playing against Mount Olive and have now won the last eight contests between the two teams. The Trojans (7-16, 4-13 CC) have now lost five out of their last six games and fall to 3-9 on the road this season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
1ST QUARTER
The first quarter opened with UNC Pembroke establishing a strong presence in the paint, led by Grace Ikenegbu, who scored two early layups to give the home team an early 4-0 lead. Tiana Spann and Shaymiah Bailey further contributed to the scoring with successful efforts inside, pushing the lead out to 14-3 with 3:18 on the clock. . Natalie Evington extended the advantage with two 3-pointers, including one at the 46-second mark, making it 22-8. Mount Olive's Savannah McAfee responded with a 3-pointer, and Jayla Hicks added a free throw, but the Braves maintained control, ending the quarter ahead 22-11 after Jerin Truesdale's final fastbreak layup.
2ND QUARTER
Bre'Asia Washington contributed with a layup early in the quarter to push the UNCP lead out to 24-13. Natalie Evington extended the lead with a 3-pointer shortly after, bringing the score to 27-13. Hicks responded with a jumper at 5:25, but UNC Pembroke continued to control the game, with Grace Ikenegbu scoring a layup at 4:12. Hicks added another basket at 2:59, but a late free throw from Shaymiah Bailey helped the home team close the quarter leading 34-23.
3RD QUARTER
Mount Olive made a strong push in the third quarter, outscoring UNC Pembroke 14-6. Truesdale was active on both ends, securing multiple defensive rebounds and contributing a layup early in the period. McAfee added to the Trojans' effort with several key layups, including one at 4:53 that trimmed the deficit to just three points. Despite the Braves' struggles from the field, Tiana Spann managed to score a layup at 5:54, and Washington followed with another with 58 seconds on the clock to give the hosts a one point lead. The quarter concluded with Keziyah Sanders stealing the ball and making a fastbreak layup as time expired, giving UNC Pembroke a slim 40-37 lead heading into the final quarter.
4TH QUARTER
UNC Pembroke dominated the fourth quarter with a strong offensive performance, outscoring Mount Olive 24-11. Shaymiah Bailey opened the quarter with a layup setting the tone for the Braves. Bre'Asia Washington contributed significantly with a fastbreak jumper at 8:39, extending the lead out to 46-37. Tiana Spann was active on both ends, providing key defensive rebounds and scoring multiple layups, while Camille Kerridge added a crucial 3-pointer at 2:59 to put the Braves aheads 60-43. Despite efforts from Hicks, who scored several points for Mount Olive, the Braves maintained control and secured the victory with a final score of 64-48.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
+ Tiana Spann finished with a team-best 14 points in 27 minutes of work. The redshirt senior flirted with a double-double with eight rebounds.
+ Shaymiah Bailey came off of the bench to provide a spark with 13 points on a 6-for-8 shooting night. The newcomer had four rebounds and one assist.
+ Natalie Evington went 4-for-13 from the perimeter to finish with 12 points, while Grace Ikenegbu finished with eight points and a team-best 13 rebounds. 
NOTABLES
+ UNC Pembroke shot 41.5 percent from the field while Mount Olive shot 37.7 percent from the floor. 
+ The Braves held a 40-28 advantage with points in the paint. 
+ UNCP scored 19 points from 15 UMO turnovers. 
+ The Black and Gold held the lead for 97.6 percent of Wednesday's contest. 
UP NEXT
The Braves will begin a two-game road trip on Saturday when they travel to Rome, Ga., to battle Shorter. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. inside the Winthrop-King Centre.
