Shorter Defeats Women's Basketball

ROME, Ga. – Shorter shot 50 percent from the field and scored 52 points from its bench to fuel a 70-51 victory over the UNC Pembroke women's basketball team on Saturday afternoon inside the Winthrop-King Centre. 

The Braves (11-14, 11-7 CC) have now lost their last two contests on the road and fall to 5-8 when playing away from Pembroke. The Hawks (15-11, 13-6 CC) have now won their last two contests and finish the season with a 7-6 record on their home court.

HOW IT HAPPENED
1ST QUARTER
The game began with UNC Pembroke taking an early lead as Keziyah Sanders drained a three-pointer on a fastbreak just 53 seconds into the quarter. The Shorter responded with a jumper from Chelsy Singleton at 7:53, starting their scoring efforts. Bre'Asia Washington extended the UNCP lead to 9-4 with a layup at the 5:36 mark. However, Amiya Redus sparked a comeback for the Hawks with consecutive layups, including a fastbreak basket at 2:46, tying the game at 9 apiece. The Hawks took control late in the quarter as Redus scored again, and Singleton closed the quarter with a 3-pointer at the buzzer, giving the Hawks a 16-9 lead.
2ND QUARTER
Shorter maintained their lead in the second quarter with a balanced attack, led by Aijah Manning, who contributed key points and defensive rebounds. They shot 46.7 percent from the field, converting seven baskets, while also adding five free throws to extend their advantage. Natalie Evington was instrumental in narrowing the gap for UNCP, hitting three 3-pointers, including a crucial one with 12 seconds remaining for the final score in the half, but Shorter held a 35-24 advantage as the teams headed into the locker rooms.
3RD QUARTER
Amya Patterson contributed significantly to Shorter's offense, starting with a layup at 9:06 and later knocking down a 3-pointer at 1:07. Natalie Evington responded with two 3-pointers, one at 8:05 and another at 4:03, attempting to close the gap for the Braves. Despite the Braves' efforts, including a late layup by Grace Ikenegbu with 18 seconds left, the hosts consistent scoring and defensive efforts, including five steals in the quarter, helped them maintain a comfortable 53-38 lead heading into the final period.
4TH QUARTER
In the fourth quarter, Shorter maintained their lead with a series of key plays, including a layup by Jordan Kierbow at 9:26 to extend the lead out to 55-40. Kierbow continued to be a pivotal player, contributing multiple baskets in the paint. UNC Pembroke's Camille Kerridge scored a jumper early in the quarter at 9:48 and added another with 1:42 left, but the team struggled to close the gap. Abby Sheets added two 3-pointers for the Braves, but the Hawks secured a 70-51 victory by outscoring the Braves 17-13 in the final quarter.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
+ Natalie Evington finished with a team-best 17 points and made five triples. The junior pulled down four rebounds, had one steal and one assist in 32 minutes of work.
+ Bre'Asia Washington added eight points, five rebounds and four assists in 28 minutes of action. 
+ Grace Ikenegbu tallied 10 rebounds in 32 minutes of work to go along with four points, two assists and one steal. 
NOTABLES
+ UNC Pembroke shot 35.1 percent from the floor, while Shorter shot 50.0 percent from the field. 
+ The Hawks tallied 42 points in the paint and limited the Braves to just 20 points from the inside. 
+ Shorter picked up 52 points from its bench. 
+ The Braves committed 22 turnovers and allowed Shorter to score 17 points from those miscues.

The Braves will play their final regular season road contest on Monday against North Greenville in Tigerville, S.C. Tipoff is slated for 5 p.m. inside Hayes Gymnasium.
