Softball Defeats Johnson C. Smith, Falls To USC Beaufort

BLUFFTON, S.C. – The UNC Pembroke softball team opened up weekend action at the USC Beaufort Tournament on Friday defeating Johnson C. Smith 15-2 in five innings, but fell to USC Beaufort 10-2 in five innings. 

The Braves registered 15 hits against Johnson C. Smith and scored multiple runs in four of the five innings. In game two, the Sand Sharks recorded 14 hits and put up eight runs in the bottom of the second inning to fuel the victory.

KEY INNINGS (GAME 1)
TOP 3 Cirstin Calloway drew a leadoff walk, stole second and would score on a triple from Alona Hanna, who would score on a wild pitch. The Braves drew a series of walks to put runners on second and third, but an infield single from Maddie Gerovac would score a run. Another wild pitch would score the fourth runner of the inning to give UNCP a 6-0 lead. 
KEY INNINGS (GAME 2)
BOT 2 USC Beaufort loaded the bases after a pair of single and Ashley Grieser getting hit by a pitch, but a single down the left field line from Catherine Conway drove in a pair of runs. With the bases still loaded, Chloe Turner drew a walk to bring home another runner. Taylor Chang smacked an RBI single up the middle followed by a two run single down the left field line from Emma Reynolds. The Sand Sharks tallied eight hits and scored eight runs in the inning to hold a 10-0 lead.

The Braves will be back in action on Saturday for the final day of the USC Beaufort-hosted tournament. The Black & Gold will play Johnson C. Smith at 3 p.m. followed by a matchup with Virginia Union at 5 p.m. at the Richard Gray Sports Complex.
