Men's Basketball Cools Off North Greenville

TIGERVILLE, S.C. – The UNC Pembroke men's basketball team shot 41.4 percent from the field and scored 16 points from turnovers on the way to a 72-59 victory over North Greenville on Monday evening inside Hayes Gymnasium. 

The Braves (20-7, 17-2 CC) have now won their last five games and have registered 20 wins in the last five seasons. The setback for the Trailblazers (17-10, 11-8 CC) marked the third loss in the last four outings.

HOW IT HAPPENED
1ST HALF
The game began with North Greenville's Savion Brown hitting a three-pointer at the 18:38 mark, giving the home team an early lead. UNC Pembroke responded with a series of successful plays, including a three-pointer by Dallas Whitney at 16:48, putting the Braves ahead 5-3. The game remained tightly contested, with both teams exchanging leads, highlighted by Ryan Djoussa's layup and free throw, which pushed the Trailblazers ahead 23-17 at the 9:01 mark. However, UNC Pembroke finished the half strong, with Nygell Verdier scoring a jump shot and a three-pointer in the final minutes. Dallas Whitney closed the first half with a jumper, securing a 39-32 lead for UNCP as the teams headed to the locker rooms. 
2ND HALF
UNC Pembroke extended its lead in the second half with a strong offensive performance, outscoring North Greenville 33-27. Dallas Whitney was a key contributor, scoring consecutive 3-pointers at 16:35 and 15:54, helping to extend the lead out to 47-38. NGU cut its deficit back to 58-53 with 8:47 remaining in regulation, but UNCP closed out the game on a 14-6 run for the victory. 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
+ Dallas Whitney finished with a career and game-high 29 points highlighted by a 6-for-9 clip from the perimeter. Whitney added two rebounds, two assists, one block and one steal in 34 minutes of work.
+ Nygell Verdier chipped in 13 points on a 6-for-13 shooting night. The redshirt senior pulled down seven rebounds to go along with three assists. 
+ Moe Bangura added a dozen points going 4-for-8 from the field. Bangura also had six rebounds, three steals and two assists. 
NOTABLES
+ UNC Pembroke shot 41.4 percent from the field, while North Greenville shot 41.2 percent from the floor. 
+ The Braves posted a 35-25 advantage in rebounds and held a 12-5 margin in offensive boards. The Black & Gold scored 14 second chance points.
+ UNCP scored 16 points from nine Trailblazer turnovers. 
+ UNC Pembroke has tallied at least 20 wins in the last five seasons.
+ Nygell Verdier becomes the first player in program history to be part of five 20 win seasons.
+ Head coach Drew Richards tied Dan Kenny for the third most wins in program history with 124. 
UP NEXT
The Braves will play their final regular season contest on Wednesday when they host Chowan for Senior Night. Tipoff is slated for 7 p.m. at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court. Senior Day festivities will take place prior to tipoff.
