DIVISION CHAMPS! Men's Basketball Edges Chowan For Title

PEMBROKE – The UNC Pembroke men's basketball held the lead for just 16.0 percent of the contest, but a strong second half surge helped the Braves to a 75-70 victory over Chowan on Wednesday at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court. 

The victory for the Braves (21-7, 18-2 CC) marks the sixth consecutive win and is the fifth-straight Conference Carolinas Regular Season title for the Black & Gold. The setback for the Hawks (15-13, 13-7 CC) snapped a two game win streak and are now 7-6 when playing on the road.

HOW IT HAPPENED
1ST HALF
The first half saw a competitive start as UNC Pembroke and Chowan traded leads four times. Javonte Waverly got the Braves on the board with a fastbreak layup at 18:22, but Eric Gordon Jr. responded quickly for the Hawks with a 3-pointer. Joseph Lezeau II was effective for Chowan with critical free throws, giving them a slight edge. Moe Bangura kept the Braves within striking distance with a series of layups and a free throw in the closing seconds, but Chowan maintained a narrow 32-29 lead at the end of the half.
2ND HALF
Dallas Whitney's early 3-pointer at 19:22 tied the game at 32-32, setting the tone for a closely contested second half. Chowan's Gordon Jr. responded quickly with a layup and a 3-pointer, helping his team maintain a slim 43-42 lead. Moe Bangura and Jonathan Kurtas were instrumental for the Braves, with Bangura scoring a crucial layup and Kurtas adding a dunk at 16:20 to level the score at 40-40. UNC Pembroke took the lead for a good with a layup from Jonathan Kurtas with 3:40 on the clock and would close out the game on an 11-9 surge for the victory. 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
+ Moe Bangura finished with a team-best 15 points on a 6-for-14 shooting performance. The senior nearly registered a double-double with eight rebounds, while also recording an assist, one block and one steal. 
+ Senior Jonathan Kurtas added 10 points on a 3-for-4 shooting night, while Quay Watson turned in 10 points but added seven rebounds. 
+ Dallas Whitney went 3-for-5 from the perimeter to chip in 11 points. 
NOTABLES
+ UNC Pembroke shot 42.6 percent from the field, while Chowan shot 44.4 percent from the floor. 
+ UNCP held the lead for just 6:25 of Wednesday's contest. 
+ The Black & Gold scored 15 second chance points and posted a 43-46 advantage in rebounds. 
+ It is the fifth consecutive Conference Carolinas regular season title for UNCP. 
UP NEXT
The Braves will now turn their attention to the Conference Carolinas Tournament. UNCP will be the top seed in the tournament and will play in the semifinals on March 7 at 12:30 p.m. inside the Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium in Spartanburg, S.C.
