Baseball Takes Series Opener Against Southern Wesleyan

CENTRAL, S.C. – UNC Pembroke tallied 12 hits and rode six no-hit innings from Jacob Smith to a 7-4 win over Southern Wesleyan in the series opener Friday evening at Dr. C Keith Connor Field.

Smith struck out five and allowed just one earned run over his six innings to move to 2-0 on the year, while Ryan Wells earned his second save after coming on to record the final out.

Landon Lucas led the way offensively, turning in a 4-5 day with a double and three RBI. 

The Braves (11-2, 5-2 CC) moved to 9-1 all-time against the Warriors (5-11, 2-5 CC), including six straight in the series.

The Black & Gold will be back in action Saturday as they wrap up the series against Southern Wesleyan with a doubleheader. First pitch is set for noon.

KEY INNINGS
TOP 2 The Braves got on the board first as Landon Lucas reached on a leadoff single and eventually came home on a passed ball to give UNCP a 1-0 lead.
TOP 3 After SWU tied the game in the top half of the third, the Black & Gold answered back with RBI singles from Hayden Davis and Lucas to reclaim the lead 3-1.
TOP 5 Davis singled and moved to third on Mason Mozeley's single, while Lucas brought home Davis with an RBI single and Peyton Young's triple scored Mozeley to stretch the lead to 5-1. 
TOP 9 Lucas struck again, this time for an RBI double to score pinch runner JD Scarbrough from first to make it 7-3.
