Baseball Sweeps Doubleheader, Series Against Southern Wesleyan

CENTRAL, S.C. – UNC Pembroke pounded out 11 hits and rode a complete-game from Kasen McCawley to an 11-1 win in the first game of the doubleheader, and used a ninth-inning rally to take the series finale 6-3 over Southern Wesleyan in Conference Carolinas action Saturday afternoon at Dr. C Keith Connor Field.

McCawley moved to 5-0 on the year as the senior allowed just four hits and one earned run, while striking out five. Jacob Smith came off the bench to deliver the go-ahead base hit in game three.

The Braves (13-2, 7-2 CC) improved to 11-1 all-time against the Warriors (5-13, 2-7 CC), including eight in a row in the series.

UNCP will be back in action Tuesday, March 3 as they host USC Aiken for a non-conference matchup. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.

TOP 1 The Braves struck first as Daniel Stephens walked to leadoff the game, stole second, and came around to score on a Landon Lucas RBI single. Peyton Young's RBI single scored Mason Mozeley to give the Black & Gold a quick 2-0 lead.
TOP 5 UNCP would stretch the lead after Lucas doubled and Young walked to set the stage for Branton Jernigan's three-run blast to make it 7-1.
TOP 6 The Braves would break the game open in the sixth, as Jernigan and Zane Brockman each had a sac fly, while Zane Brockman added an RBI double. Another run came home on a SWU error to make it 11-1.
KEY INNINGS (GAME 2)
TOP 7 Ashton Donathan singled and would come home to score on a Daniel Stephens sac fly to knot the score at 1-1.
BOT 7 Ethan Shimmel's solo homer gave the Warriors a 2-1 lead.
TOP 9 Tyler Steele reached on an error, Stephens walked, and Hayden Davis reached on an infield single to load the bases. Jacob Smith delivered a go-ahead two-run single, while Landon Lucas delivered the knockout blow with a three-run jack to left to make it 6-2.
