Men's Basketball Takes Care Of Francis Marion

PEMBROKE – The UNC Pembroke men's basketball team shot 55.3 percent from the field and limited Francis Marion to its lowest shooting performance of the season on the way to a 79-56 victory over the Patriots on Wednesday evening at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court. 

The Braves (14-6, 11-1 CC) push their win streak out to eight games and have now won the last seven meetings against Francis Marion. The setback for the Patriots (6-14, 6-6 CC) snapped a two game win streak and fall to 33-12 when playing UNCP in Pembroke.

HOW IT HAPPENED
1ST HALF
The game opened with Francis Marion's Kennard Davis sinking a jumper to secure an early lead, but the Braves quickly responded with a layup and free throw by Nygell Verdier. Midway through the half, Moe Bangura's 3-pointer extended the home team's lead to 13-6. Demar Anderson contributed significantly, scoring a fastbreak layup and later hitting a 3-pointer, helping UNC Pembroke maintain their advantage. Dallas Whitney's late dunk pushed the lead to 38-17, and Tyrese Melo-Garcia's jumper in the final seconds ensured a 41-24 lead for the Braves at the end of the first half.
2ND HALF
UNC Pembroke extended their lead in the second half, ultimately securing a 79-56 victory. Nygell Verdier led the charge with multiple layups and free throws, contributing significantly to the team's 38-point second half. Dallas Whitney's defensive efforts, including a block and key rebounds, were pivotal in maintaining the team's momentum. Francis Marion attempted to close the gap with Cole Deptula and AuMauri Tillman each hitting from beyond the arc, but they could not overcome the deficit.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
+ Demar Anderson finished with a career-best 18 points highlighted by a 4-for-6 clip from the perimeter. Anderson pulled down four rebounds as well in 21 minutes of work.
+ Dallas Whitney flirted with a double-double with 15 and seven rebounds. The newcomer dished out three assists and had a trio of blocks as well in 30 minutes of work. 
+ Nygell Verdier also finished with 15 points following a 5-for-8 shooting performance. The redshirt senior grabbed four rebounds in 25 minutes of action. 
NOTABLES
+ UNC Pembroke shot 55.3 percent from the field and held Francis Marion to its lowest shooting percentage of the season shooting just 30.2 percent from the field. 
+ The Black & Gold picked up 37 points from its bench and made good on 20-of-29 free throw attempts. 
+ UNCP limited FMU to just 9-for-35 from the perimeter. 
+ The Braves held a 34-10 advantage with points in the paint.

The Braves will hit the road to Franklin Springs, Ga., on Saturday to face Emmanuel. Tipoff is slated for 4 p.m. inside the Shaw Athletic Center.
