Women's Basketball Rallies, Falls Short To Francis Marion

PEMBROKE – Francis Marion set the tone early jumping out to an early 23-9 in the first quarter to help fuel a 64-53 victory over the UNC Pembroke women's basketball team on Wednesday evening at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court.

The setback for the Braves (8-11, 8-4 CC) snapped a four-game win steak and fall to 4-6 when playing at home this season. The Patriots (13-7, 10-2 CC) have now won their last six games and are 6-4 on the road this year.

HOW IT HAPPENED
1ST QUARTER
The first quarter commenced with Francis Marion taking an early lead, thanks to Terriana Gray's two successful free throws within the first two minutes. Jasmine Grant extended the advantage with two more free throws at the 7:58 mark, bringing the score to 4-0. UNC Pembroke's Tiana Spann made the first basket for the hosts with a layup at 6:39 cutting the deficit to 6-2. However, Uriah Jennings led a strong offensive effort for the Patriots, scoring multiple times, including a layup at 1:10 that pushed the lead to 21-9. By the end of the quarter, Francis Marion held a 23-9 advantage over the Braves.
2ND QUARTER
Francis Marion maintained a lead through the second quarter, but UNC Pembroke showed resilience with a strong performance from Shaymiah Bailey. Bailey scored eight points, including consecutive layups at 9:20 and 8:59, narrowing the gap to 23-13. Bre'Asia Washington added four points, including two free throws at 2:11, as the quarter ended with Francis Marion ahead 32-24.
3RD QUARTER
Tiana  Spann opened the quarter with a layup to work the UNCP deficit back to 32-26. Shaymiah Bailey contributed significantly with consecutive layups as the Braves trailed 35-32. Camille Kerridge added a crucial three-pointer at 2:18, to cut UNC Pembroke's deficit back to 39-35. Despite these efforts, the Patriots held their lead, aided by key baskets from Jennings and a free throw from Kiara Croskey, closing the quarter with a 42-37 advantage.
4TH QUARTER
In the fourth quarter, the Patriots outscored the Braves 22-16 to secure a 64-53 victory. Jennings contributed significantly for Francis Marion, scoring multiple key baskets, including a layup at 8:59 and a jumper at 5:11. Bre'Asia Washington made an impact for the Braves with a fastbreak layup at 7:19, closing the gap to 46-43. However, Croskey's late-game scoring, including a layup and free throw with under a minute to play in regulation, extended Francis Marion's lead, and they maintained control to the final buzzer.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
+ Freshman Shaymiah Bailey finished with a team-best 16 points on an 8-for-10 shooting performance. Bailey grabbed four rebounds and one steal in 32 minutes of work.
+ Bre'Asia Washington went 5-for-10 from the field to add 14 points. The junior grabbed four rebounds, had a trio of steals, two blocks and two assists.
+ Tiana Spann added eight points and a team-best 10 rebounds. 
NOTABLES
+ UNC Pembroke shot 37.9 percent from the field, while Francis Marion finished the game shooting 40.7 percent from the floor.
+ The two teams combined to go 1-for-11 from the perimeter. 
+ The Braves picked up 27 points from its bench and scored 12 second chance points.

The Braves will travel to Franklin Springs, Ga., on Saturday to face Emmanuel. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. inside the Shaw Athletic Center.
