Softball Sweeps Newberry

PEMBROKE – The UNC Pembroke softball team registered 19 hits across two games on the away to a sweep over Newberry on Saturday afternoon at Willoughby Field.

The Braves scored runs in all five innings to take the opening game 11-3 in five innings. The Black & Gold completed the sweep with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to go along with seven hits to fuel a 3-1 victory in the nightcap.

KEY INNINGS (GAME 1)
BOT 1	Emma Wrenn reached on a fielding error and would advance to third on a double to left centerfield from Cirstin Calloway. Alona Hanna drove home Wrenn with a sacrifice fly, and Kaitlynn Hunt's single brought Calloway home to give the Braves an early 2-0 lead.
BOT 5	Makayla Etling and Maggie Cunningham both drew walks, and would advance a base on a wild pitch. A single from Emma Wrenn scored both runners, followed by an ill-timed fielding error would allow Wrenn to score. Alona Hanna singled and would advance to second on a wild pitch. Kaitlynn Hunt singled through the right side to score Hanna.

KEY INNINGS (GAME 2)
TOP 1	Ella Stone drew a walk, advanced to second on a passed ball, and stood on third after a bunt single from Christine Butler. Samantha Clark grounded into a double play, but Stone scored to give Newberry an early 1-0 lead.
BOT 2	Chloe Locklear drew a leadoff walk and would move to second on a groundout. Maggie Cunningham single to left field to move Locklear to third and would score on a throwing error to tie the game at 1-1.
BOT 5	UNC Pembroke loaded the bases with a single from Cirstin Calloway, a walk from Alona Hanna and a single from Chloe Locklear. Cayden Thomas was hit by a pitch to plate Calloway, followed by a single up the middle from Maddie Gerovac to cap off the two run inning.
