Catawba Sweeps Softball

SALISBURY – Catawba registered 19 hits across the two games to a fuel a non-conference sweep over the UNC Pembroke softball team Saturday afternoon at Whitley Field. 

Catawba scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning and limited UNC Pembroke to just two hits to take the opening game 8-0 in five innings. The Braves recorded 12 hits but stranded 10 runners on base as the Indians completed the sweep with a 6-4 victory.

KEY INNINGS (GAME 1)
BOT 1 Alexis Monroe got the inning started with a leadoff single and would advance to third on a single to right field from Abbey Nixon. Brianna Gallagher cleared the bases with a double to the outfield grass. Grace Flynn would reach on a fielding error, but Rachel Pressley drove home a run with an RBI single to left field. Lainey Ruscoe capped off the four-run inning with a sacrifice fly to right field to put Catawba ahead 4-0. 
KEY INNINGS (GAME 2)
TOP 3 Alex Serbio started the inning with a leadoff double to right field and would score on a triple to right field from Cirstin Calloway. A sacrifice fly from Alona Hanna scored Calloway to put the Braves up 2-1.
BOT 4 Catawba put runners on first and second after back-to-back singles from Adda Prescott and Jordan McCorkle. Both runners would advance on a sacrifice bunt from Bella Boykin, but a single up the middle from Abbey Nixon scored both runners to give the Indians a 5-2 lead. Brianna Gallagher singled up the middle to put runners on the corners, but an RBI single up the middle from Grace Flynn cushioned Catawba's 6-2 lead.

The Braves will step into Conference Carolinas play on Tuesday when they make the short trip to Florence, S.C. to face Francis Marion. First pitch of the doubleheader is set for 4 p.m. at the FMU Softball Stadium.
