Baseball Explodes Late To Take Series Opener Against Chowan

PEMBROKE – No. 23 UNC Pembroke broke the game open with six runs in the bottom of the eighth on the way to a 14-6 win over Chowan in the series opener Friday evening at Sammy Cox Field.

Hayden Davis had three hits, including his first two home runs as a Brave, while Mason Mozeley also chipped in with three hits. Every offensive starter had at least one hit.

The Braves (17-5, 10-3 CC) improved to 36-4 all-time against the Hawks (3-14, 3-10 CC), and are now 31-2 when playing Chowan in Pembroke.

The Black & Gold will be back in action Saturday as they wrap up the series with a doubleheader. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.

KEY INNINGS
BOT 1 The Braves got on the board first as Daniel Stephens singled, stole second, and came home on a Hayden Davis two-run homer.
BOT 3 After Chowan tied the scored in the top half of the second, the Braves jumped back in front on an Ashton Donathan RBI single to make it 3-2.
BOT 3 Mason Mozeley's solo blast made it 4-2, while Branton Jernigan followed with a solo homer of his own two batters later to stretch the lead to 5-2.
BOT 4 Davis reached on a one-out single and jogged home on Mason Mozeley's two-run homer to make it 5-2, while Peyton Young stole second and moved to third on an error before coming home on Seth Moore's two-out RBI single to stretch the lead to 6-2.
TOP 5 The Hawks scored four runs on five hits, a walk, and a wild pitch to knot the score at 6-6.
BOT 5 Davis put the Black & Gold back ahead with his second two-run homer of the game to make it 8-6.
BOT 8 The Braves used four hits to tack on six runs, capped off by a JD Scarbrough two-run double to make it 14-6.
