Softball Rights Ship, Takes Two From Barton

WILSON - The UNC Pembroke softball team recorded 23 hits across two games to fuel a Conference Carolinas sweep over Barton on Saturday afternoon at Jeffries Field. 
 
Barton held a 4-3 lead heading into the top of the seventh inning, but a two-run blast from Chloe Locklear proved to be the difference to give the Braves a 5-4 victory to start the day. A seven-run fourth inning and limiting Barton to just three hits completed the sweep with a 12-2 victory in five innings.

KEY INNINGS (GAME 1)
TOP 1 Alex Serbio got the game started with a leadoff single followed by a single from Emma Wrenn. Both runners stole on the next pitch, and Serbio scored on a sacrifice fly from Kaitlynn Hunt. Maddie Gerovac knocked a double to left field to score Wrenn and give the Braves a 2-0 lead. 
BOT 4 Barton loaded the bases with a pair of singles and a fielding error by UNC Pembroke. Makenzie Cyzick knocked a single to right field to score on run, followed by a sacrifice fly from Madison Mercer to knot the score at 2-2.
TOP 7 Kaitlynn Hunt double to the outfield grass, but Chloe Locklear lit up the scoreboard with a homer down the left field line to put UNCP ahead 5-4. 
KEY INNINGS (GAME 2)
TOP 4 The Braves put runners on the corners when Kaitlyn King and Maggie Cunningham both singled. Alex Serbio's fielder's choice allowed King to score, followed by an RBI single to center field from Emma Wrenn. Chloe Locklear drove in two runs with a double to left field, followed by a fielding error from Barton to allow another run to score. Kaitlyn King drove in a run with a single, and a throwing error would allow the seventh run of the inning to cross the plate and put UNCP ahead 11-0.

The Braves will open up a road trip on Tuesday when they travel to Virginia to battle with Ferrum. First pitch is slated for 2 p.m. at the Vickie Van Kleeck Softball Complex.
