Baseball Rallies To Walk Off No. 16 Wingate

PEMBROKE – UNC Pembroke scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth to tie the game, and then used a walk-off wild pitch to take a 10-9 win over No. 15 Wingate in non-conference action Tuesday at Sammy Cox Field.

Branton Jernigan and Morgan Padgett each drove in three runs to pace the offense. Ryan Wells, Taylor Batten, and Jarred Lindholm combined to blank Wingate over the last four innings, combining for six punchouts.

The Braves (20-9) improved to 55-37 all-time against the Bulldogs (23-8), and have now won 33 of the last 40 matchups against Wingate.

The Black & Gold will be back in action Friday as they welcome Shorter to town for a Conference Carolinas series. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.

KEY INNINGS
TOP 1 Wingate struck first on RBI singles from Tanner McCammon and Jake Courville to take a 2-0 lead.
BOT 1 The Braves answered back as Daniel Stephens led off with a single and eventually came home on Branton Jernigan's RBI single. Morgan Padgett drew an RBI hit by pitch to tie the game at 2-2, while Ashton Donathan followed with another hit by pitch to make it 3-2.
TOP 3 Wingate jumped back ahead on a Ben Karpowicz two-run homer to take a 4-3 lead.
BOT 3 Landon Lucas singled and came home on Jernigan's RBI double to tie the game, while Padgett brought home Jernigan with an RBI single to give the Braves a 5-4 lead.
TOP 6 Wingate took the lead in the fourth and extended it to 9-6 on Bowen Powell's two-run double.
BOT 7 UNCP cut into the deficit as Peyton Young walked, stole second, and came home on Padgett's RBI single to make it 9-7. 
BOT 8 JD Scarbrough reached on a leadoff single, stole second, and came home on a Wingate error to make it 9-8, while another Wingate error allowed Hayden Davis to score and tie the game at 9-9.
BOT 9 Donathan reached on a leadoff HBP and advanced 90 feet on Scarbrough's sac bunt coupled with a Wingate error. Stephens singled to left field to load the bases, before Donathan raced home a wild pitch to take the 10-9 win.
