No. 19 Francis Marion Steals Two From Softball

PEMBROKE - No. 19 Francis Marion posted a 23-10 advantage in hits and used timely hitting to sweep the UNC Pembroke softball team on Tuesday afternoon at Willoughby Softball Field. 
 

The Patriots tallied four runs to start the game while the Braves responded with two runs in the bottom of the first, but FMU picked up insurance runs late to take the opening game 6-2. A pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth inning in the back half of the doubleheader gave the hosts the lead, but Francis Marion scored six runs on seven hits in the top of the seventh inning to complete the sweep with a 9-4 victory.

KEY INNINGS (GAME 1)
TOP 1 Madalyn White started the game with a leadoff double and reached third on a bunt single from Anderson Thrower. Thrower would steal second, and an ill-timed passed ball allowed White to score. A double from McKenzie Jewell scored Thrower. Maddy Golka drew a walk, but a triple down the right field line from Paige Strickland scored a pair of runs to give FMU an early 4-0 lead. 
BOT 1 The Braves would put runners on the corners after Alex Serbio reached on an error and Chloe Locklear beat out an infield single. Alona Hanna smacked a double to the left field gap to clear the bases. 
KEY INNINGS (GAME 2)
BOT 6 Alex Serbio and Emma Wrenn both beat out infield singles and would advance 60-feet on a wild pitch. An ill-timed throwing error on a ball hit from Kaitlynn Hunt allowed both runners to score and give the Braves a slight 4-3 lead. 
TOP 7 Francis Marion loaded the bases with a leadoff double from Mikaela Goss, a bunt single from Madalyn White and an infield single from Anderson Thrower. A deep sacrifice fly from Jenna Walling allowed Goss to score and tie the game. McKenzie Jewell found the outfield grass for an RBI single followed by an RBI single from Riley Webster to put the Patriots ahead 6-4. Paige Strickland cleared the bases with a two run triple followed by an RBI single to left field from Kendal Miller to put FMU out in front 9-4.
