McCawley Hurls No-Hitter, Baseball Sweeps Doubleheader And Series Against Shorter

PEMBROKE – Kasen McCawley hurled a no-hitter on the way to a 4-0 win in the opening game of the doubleheader, while the Braves offense scored early and often en route to a 13-3 win in the finale to finish off a sweep of Shorter in Conference Carolinas action Saturday at Sammy Cox Field.

McCawley turned in the first UNC Pembroke no-hitter since Trystan Kimmel and Darren Bowen combined for one against USC Aiken on February 5, 2022. The senior also logged the first UNCP solo no-hitter since Jake Dailey against Millersville on February 14, 2009. McCawley struck out ten and polished off the seven-inning no-hitter on just 83 pitches. 

Landon Lucas was 3-3 with two doubles and an RBI in the opener, while Peyton Young was 2-4 with two doubles of his own and three RBI in the series finale.

The Braves (23-9, 3-18 CC) improved to 3-0 all-time against the Hawks (11-19, 3-18 CC).

The Black & Gold will be back in action Tuesday, March 31 as they head south to take on USC Aiken. First pitch is set for 5 p.m. at Roberto Hernandez Stadium.

BOT 1 The Braves would jump out to a quick 3-0 lead as Landon Lucas provided an RBI single, while Peyton Young would later follow with a two-run double.
BOT 6 UNCP tacked on an insurance run via Morgan Padgett's safety squeeze to make it 4-0.
KEY INNINGS (GAME 2)
TOP 1 Shorter struck first as Isaiah Sims doubled and came home on Reece Newberry's RBI single.
BOT 2 The Braves jumped in front as Branton Jernigan singled, stole second, and came home on a Shorter error to tie the score, while JD Scarbrough gave UNCP the lead with an RBI bunt single. Another Hawks error made it 3-1, while Hayden Davis followed with an RBI single to stretch the lead to 4-1.
BOT 4 The Black & Gold put the game away with five runs in the frame, as Mason Mozeley delivered an RBI single, followed by a Landon Lucas sac fly and a Peyton Young two-run double, while Morgan Padgett capped off the scoring with an RBI groundout to make it 10-1.
