Baseball Can't Hold Off No. 24 Belmont Abbey In Series Opener

BELMONT – UNC Pembroke scored five runs in the top of the eighth inning to take a 7-3 lead, but No. 24 Belmont Abbey answered with seven runs over the final two innings to take a 10-7 win in Game 1 of the series Friday evening at Abbey Yard.

Branton Jernigan and Landon Lucas each homered for the Braves.

The Braves (14-4, 7-3 CC) fell to 22-23 all-time against the Crusaders (13-5, 11-2 CC), and have now dropped four straight in the series.

The Black & Gold will be back in action Saturday as they wrap up the series with a doubleheader. First pitch is set for noon.

KEY INNINGS
BOT 2 Belmont Abbey used three hits, a hit by pitch, a sac fly, and a double steal to jump out to an early 3-0 lead.
TOP 4 The Braves cut into the deficit as Mason Mozeley singled and came home on Branton Jernigan's two-run homer to make it 3-2.
TOP 8 Ashton Donathan reached on a lead-off single and moved up 90 feet on Tyler Steele's sac bunt. Daniel Stephens and Hayden Davis each worked walks to load the bases. Mozeley gave the Braves the lead with a two-run single, before Landon Lucas followed with a three-run blast to make it 7-3.
BOT 9 After a Caleb Burr solo homer in the eighth inning, Burr would tie the game at 7-7 with an infield single, before Joe Whitaker ended it with a three-run walk-off home run.
