Softball Rallies Late, Sweeps Belmont Abbey

PEMBROKE - The UNC Pembroke softball team used timely hitting and capitalized on errors to sweep Belmont Abbey on Saturday afternoon at Willoughby Softball Field. 

The Braves were held to just three hits to start the day, but a three-run homer from Chloe Locklear in the bottom of the seventh inning gave UNCP a 6-5 win over the Crusaders. Belmont Abbey committed five errors in the second game of the doubleheader and helped fuel a four-run sixth inning to complete the sweep with a 7-4 victory.

KEY INNINGS (GAME 1)
TOP 6 Belmont Abbey put runners on first and second, but a ill-timed fielding error scored a runner to tie the score at 3-3. Ella Crowe found the outfield grass for an RBI single followed by a sacrifice fly from Kenneday Teasley to take a 5-3 lead. 
BOT 7 Alex Serbio and Emma Wrenn drew back-to-back walks, but Chloe Locklear walked it off with a three-run blast over the left field fence. 
KEY INNINGS (GAME 2)
TOP 6 The Crusaders loaded the bases with a trio of singles from Casey Laing, Megan Towery, and Kennedy Teasley. A throwing error by UNCP allowed one run to score, but a bases clearing triple from Ava Elkins put BAC ahead 4-3. 
BOT 6 Alona Hanna beat out an infield single and reached third in a single from Maggie Cunningham. Alex Serbio reached on a fielder's choice that scored both runners, as Serbio would score on a passed ball. UNC Pembroke loaded the bases after a single from Kaitlynn Hunt, and Chloe Locklear and Summer Bullard both reaching via errors. A passed ball moved the runners and allowed Hunt to score.

The Braves will take the week off and return to action on Saturday when they host Barton for Senior Day. First pitch of the twinbill is set for 1 p.m. at Willoughby Softball Field and admission is free. Senior Day festivities will begin prior to first pitch.
