Softball Closes Out Regular Season With Senior Day Sweep Over Barton

PEMBROKE - The UNC Pembroke softball team rattled off 28 hits across both games on the way to a sweep over Barton on Saturday afternoon at Willoughby Field for senior day. 

The Braves got on the board first to start the day with a run in the bottom of the third inning, but a four run fifth and sixth innings helped fuel a 9-1 victory in six innings over the Bulldogs in game one. Both teams put up a run in the second inning, but UNCP scored multiple runs in three consecutive innings to complete the sweep with a 10-2 victory to close out the day.

KEY INNINGS (GAME 1)
BOT 5 Emma Wrenn drew a leadoff walk, but a home run from Kaitlynn Hunt lit up the scoreboard to give the Braves a 3-0 lead. Alona Hanna drew a walk, stole second, advanced to third on a throwing error and scored on Maggie Cunningham single up the middle. Maddie Gerovac singled up the middle to advance Cunningham, and both would advance an additional 60-feet on a throwing error. Rachel Mori knocked a single to the left side to score Cunningham to give UNCP a 5-0 lead. 
KEY INNINGS (GAME 2)
BOT 5 Maggie Cunningham got the inning started with a leadoff single and advanced to second on a four-pitch walk from Maddie Gerovac. Both runners advanced on a deep flyout, but a bunt single from Cirstin Calloway scored Cunningham. An ill-timed wild pitch allowed Gerovac to score followed by an RBI single from Alex Serbio. Emma Wrenn smacked a single to left field to put Serbio on third, but a single from Kaitlynn Hunt to the outfield gap scored Serbio to end the game.

UP NEXT
The Braves will now turn their attention to the Conference Carolinas Tournament set to begin on April 23. UNCP earned the fifth seed in the tournament and will play 12th-seeded Converse in the single elimination play-in game of the tournament on Thursday. First pitch is set for 1:30 p.m. at Tyger River Park in Duncan, S.C.
