Baseball Slugs Way Past No. 4 Catawba

PEMBROKE – UNC Pembroke racked up 16 hits, including six for extra bases, on the way to a 15-10 win over No. 4 Catawba in non-conference action Tuesday evening at Sammy Cox Field.

Landon Lucas and Branton Jernigan each homered for the Braves, while Hayden Davis came off the bench and delivered a three-run blast, as well.

Lucas collected four hits for the fourth time this season, and also chipped in with three RBI. Jernigan and Davis added three RBI apiece for the Black & Gold.

The Braves (29-16) jumped back ahead 34-33 in the all-time series against the Indians (35-9). 

The win marks the seventh-straight full season the Braves have defeated a top-ten ranked opponent.

The Black & Gold will be back in action Friday for Youth Night as they host Barton for a Conference Carolinas series to close out the regular season. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.

KEY INNINGS
TOP 1 Catawba struck first on a Brandon Crabtree solo homer, while Ty Hubbard added an RBI infield single to make it 2-0.
BOT 1 The Braves answered immediately, as Daniel Stephens singled and trotted home on a Landon Lucas two-run blast to tie the score. Branton Jernigan would follow with a double and move to third on Jackson Crute's single, while Mason Mozeley drove in Jernigan with an RBI fielder's choice to give the Black & Gold a 3-2 lead.
TOP 4 Catawba jumped back ahead on RBI singles from Logan Dyer, Sam Hunter, and Jake Dunlap to take a 5-4 lead.
BOT 5 UNCP tied the score as Boone Herman led off with a bunt single and eventually came home on Ashton Donathan's RBI single, before Stephens scored Donathan with an RBI double to put the Braves up 6-5.
TOP 6 The Indians reclaimed the lead on RBI doubles from Hunter and Hubbard, with a Dunlap sac fly in between to take an 8-6 lead.
BOT 7 Donathan walked, Tyler Steele was hit by a pitch, followed by a Stephens walk to load the bases. A Lucas RBI infield single cut it to 8-7, while Jernigan followed with an RBI walk to knot the game at 8-8. Crute gave the Braves the lead with an RBI walk, while Mozeley followed with a sac fly to make it 10-8. Hayden Davis capped off the seven-run inning with a pinch-hit, three-run blast to stretch the lead to 13-8.
BOT 8 After Catawba cut the deficit to 13-10 in the top of the frame, Jernigan put the game away with a two-run blast to make it 15-10.
