Football Drops Defensive Battle At Fayetteville State

FAYETTEVILLE - UNC Pembroke took a 7-0 lead into halftime, but couldn't muster any points in the second half as Fayetteville State took a 10-7 win over the Braves Saturday night in the Two Rivers Classic at Luther "Nick" Jeralds Stadium.

After an hour-plus weather delay for the second-straight week, UNCP led 7-0 at the break on a Tre Rogers touchdown reception. The Braves had a chance to take a fourth-quarter lead but Fayetteville State came away with a redzone interception to put an end to the threat.

The Braves (1-1) fell to 10-3 all-time against the Broncos (2-0), as the Two Rivers Classic has now alternated winners for six consecutive seasons.

HOW IT HAPPENED
1ST QUARTER
Fayetteville State had the game's first scoring chance after an 11-play, 57-yard drive, but the Broncos missed a 27-yard field goal to end the possession. UNC Pembroke's ensuing drive went for seven plays and 38 yards, highlighted by a 20-yard catch from Malik Brown, but stalled and ended with a punt from Mitchell Lake. TaShawn Jeter put an end to the Broncos next drive with his first interception of the season as the game headed to the second quarter scoreless.
2ND QUARTER
The game remained scoreless until UNCP's final drive of the half, which started at its own four-yard line with 1:58 left. Josh Ehrlich found Avery Curtis out of the backfield for a 21-yard completion to start the drive, and then found Curtis again for a 30-yard catch. Ehrlich then found Malik Brown for back-to-back completions of 10 and 21 yards to get the ball to the nine-yard line. Ehrlich found Tre Rogers alone in the corner of the end zone for a nine-yard touchdown to take the game's first lead. (7-0 UNCP)
3RD QUARTER
Fayetteville State's drive to open the third quarter went for 59 yards on ten plays, including receptions from Marcus Fleming for 22 and 33 yards. The Broncos converted on fourth-and-goal as Jamir Dismukes found Jaden Butler for a three-yard touchdown pass to tie the game. (7-7)
UNC Pembroke's ensuing drive made its way into Bronco territory after Ehrlich's 20-yard scramble got the ball to FSU's 34, but Zyking Patillo picked off an Ehrlich pass to force the turnover. 
4TH QUARTER
UNCP started the fourth quarter with a bang, as Ehrlich found Brown for a 44-yard completion, but Patillo intercepted Ehrlich for a second time to give the Broncos back the ball. After back-to-back UNCP personal fouls gave the Broncos 30 free yards, Bryan Pulley hauled in his first interception of the season to halt another Fayetteville State drive. FSU's next drive started with a 63-yard rush by Braylon Vinson to get to the Pembroke 16-yard line. UNCP's defense would hold Fayetteville State to a field goal, as John Vargas connected from 41 yards to give the Broncos the lead. (10-7 FSU)
UNCP forced Fayetteville State to a 4th-and-1 on the Broncos final offensive possession, but FSU drew the Braves offside to eat more clock. Abdoulazim Bayor's punt pinned the Braves at its own seven-yard line with 11 seconds remaining, and two UNCP deep shots fell incomplete as time expired.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
+ Josh Ehrlich completed 15 of 31 passing attempts for 196 yards and a touchdown. Ehrlich also added 77 rushing yards on 11 carries.
+ Malik Brown logged four catches for a team-high 95 yards.
+ Tre Rogers had one reception that went for a nine-yard touchdown.
+ Justin Foreman racked up a game-high ten tackles, while Jadin Baptist, DJ Dunifer, and Bre'Andre Horsley each logged one sack apiece.
+ TaShawn Jeter and Bryan Pulley each recorded an interception.
NOTABLES
+ FSU ran 63 plays for 298 yards, while UNCP ran 51 plays for 297 yards.
+ The Black & Gold won the time of possession 31:22 to 28:38 and forced two FSU turnovers.
+ The Braves racked up 95 penalty yards on 13 penalties.
UP NEXT
The Braves will be back in action Saturday, September 12 as they head to Rome, Ga. to open Conference Carolinas play at Shorter. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. at Barron Stadium.
