AS A FRESHMAN (2011): Redshirted. Did not see varsity action.

HIGH SCHOOL: Prepped at Southern Lee High School for coach Thomas Paris … Threw for 1,806 yards and 16 touchdowns en route to all-conference laurels … Also rushed 124 times for 580 yards and five additional scores … A North Carolina East-West All-Star game nominee and National Grant Athlete of the Year ... Was also an all-conference standout in baseball for the Cavaliers.

PERSONAL: The son of Amy and Royce Gaines … Has a younger brother, Connor … Maintained a 3.14 cumulative grade point average at Southern Lee High School and graduated in the top 35 percent of his 215-member senior class … A business management major at UNCP.
